    Not recommended.

Traction patch tends to be down when you force a 315 on a 9.5" wide wheel compared to a 275 on the same wheel.

Some will allow to be mounted. It isn't worth it. My statement above is why.
That...and it isn't safe to push a tire like that.

Different tires will be different widths.

Most 315's want at least a 10.5" wheel. 11" being the better bet.

i just put 295/35/18's on a 9.5 and wouldnt go any wider than that. This is not even recommended though.

a quick lookup on tire rack website shows a goodyear eagle gs-d3 with 11.2" of tread width on a 11" rim.

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...e1=yes&place=1

comparing the same tire in a 275/40-17 on a 9.5" wheel, it has 9.4" of tread width. in theory, putting a 315 on a 9" factory wheel, you are going to pull the sidewall in 2" and lose at least 1" of tread. so, at a maximum, you'll have 10.2" of tread width. going to a 315 as compared to a 275 of the same brand, you are only gaining at most .8".

now, you can get more tread width staying with a 275 tire, if you pick the right tire. the yokohama avs es100 has a tread width of 10.7" on a 9.5" wheel.

I got 315's on my stock WS6 9.5 inch rims and have gone 10,000 miles with no problems so far. They will mount up but it is a real pain.

some tires will mount... especially if they have softer construction.
You won't be able to even mount a Hoosier RoadRace/AutoX tire on a stock rim.

You still want a tire that is properly mounted on the wheel... although some will mount, they aren't properly mounted on the wheel, providing far from ideal conditions. you're better off putting 275s... or go wider wheels.

don't get me wrong... i love width, but also prefer doing things right and safe.

and losing the strength of the sidewall when cornering due to its mounting position, not having the sidewall being perpendicular to the road. directions of the forces aren't any longer on the designed directions of the tire... hence the reason traction isn't improved, but hindered.

not really... cause if you mount them on 17x11, you'll see the improvements, hence, not perfect.
