Can something like this be repaired or does it need a new section of leather (if thats possible) ?

Usually, you need to replace the damaged section or install a new cover. The bolsters on our cars take a beating. If you have an upholstery shop in your area, take it over for them to have a look at. You'll save youself some $$ if you can remove and reinstall the cover yourself versus having the shop do it.

I took it to a shop that someone recommended and they want $175 to replace the ripped leather panel and the vinyl panel next to it (has some cracks as well). He said the only problem is matching up the stitching.

    Yep,

Looks a good job and you do sound pleased....

So, i wonder what sort of cost was involved and how much of a stripdown
of the seat was involved in the job? The insert looks a good color match too.

I took the seat out of the car and dropped it off at a shop near me. He took the top seat cover off and replaced the leather panel that had the rip and also replaced the vinyl panel next to it. $175

I was cruising 6litereaters's site yesterday and noticed they sell replacement seat covers for front and rear. They looked good, but for replacement covers for front and rear seats in leather is $1100. I'm saving my pennies...

Plus you would have to pay someone to install them (if you can't do it yourself). Also the guy that fixed my seat said some of the foam had to be replaced too because it was just falling apart. Thats why I let a professional do it

When I was a tech at a BMW dealership, I had to replace several seat covers and foams. Its been ten years since then, but I'm certain I could do it again. LOL, but the lazy side of me wants pay someone to do the seats since its not exactly a fun task... I love working on cars, but dont care for interior or body work
