Custon LED turn signals for F-Body mirrors?

I just made some LED turn signals for my mirrors. I purchased the led's from a late model GM pickup and the new lenses from salvage yard. I made a template of the led's and then drilled the holes with a dremel. Then I glued the led's onto the backside of the mirror. It was really simple.

    NOW, my questions are>>>

:How do I pull my lenses out of the mirror body without breaking them?

:& will the bare LED's be to bright and blind me at night? The mirrors that the LED's came with had some kind of a tint on them. I am guessing that it was to shade some of the light?

    :Anybody ever done this before?

    And here are the pics

    I will.

I wish I could have gotten the led's a little higher to center them, but they would not fit unless I really cut them up.

Yes, just cut out the plastic behind the glass. When the led's are not lit, you can not see the holes for the lights, unlike production vehicles that are equipped with the flashers.

Good job! If you find that they are too bright, I think it would be fairly simple to add a resistor to the power lead until they are the brightness level you desire.

How did you deal with the 3m adhesive tape on the back of the lens and between the plastic lens holder?

How and where are you wiring them to the turn signal wires? I assume you will followed the power mirror wires to the underdash area.

What year model truck were these out of?

I drilled the plastic until I got to the tape. Then I used a small rotary wire brush to clean the glue off.

I will run the wires through the door into the car to under the dash. This is where the turnsignal wires are. I have instructions for wiring it from another person who did the install similar to mine.

The truck was a 05 to 07 full size Chevy or CMC pickup truck.

    Awesome thanks!
Post some pics once you have them installed and let us know exactly where you spliced the wires in. I might just try this if you find everything works out as I have a spare set of mirrors at home, just need the LED's.

Here is a link to this mod. This guy made his own l.e.d.'s and installed them on his Camaro/Firebird mirrors. He tells you exactly what wires to splice into.

He is talking about polishing off the silvering from the front face of the mirror to allow the light to shine through yet your post said that they are not visible when led's are unlit so it seems you did not polish away the silvering. Do you find it unnecessary to do this step?

I am unsure wether they will be too bright or not. I need to get them hooked up and try it at night. Then I will make the decision to leave them the same or grind off the mirroring. Although, I have tried them in a dark room and they seemed to be really bright.

I guess the question is are they not bright enough as removing the silvering would only make them brighter. If I understand you, they seem plenty bright without removing any silvering correct?

Yes, they do seem to be plenty bright.

Factory equipped trucks have the mirroring removed but they also have a slight tint to them..
