Clear Coat
Good Afternoon,
I have a question.
How hard is it to strip the clear coat off of a hood and repaint it?
Its off of my Firehawk and the clear coat has faded and some parts are coming off.
I have heard of wet sanding. Not sure if this applies here. Or should I just have it professionally done?

If the clear coat is already coming off the hood, wet sanding it wont help you out to much. It will almost (without looking at a picture) need to be striped and reshot.

Sand below clear to color and from there you can go cheap and reshoot with color or do a primer and then color, sand, color, clear, sand, clear, sand, and buff to finish

then sand and shoot how desired
edit: cant read the can but it removes the clear and color of the paint but leaves the primer, awesome stuff, and you can buy it at AZLast edited by Lucky 13; 03-01-2009 at 07:30 PM.

Thanks for the reply's.
I'll get you a few pictures today as long as the sky permits.
My big issue is that I don't have an awesome place to paint it. I don't have covered parking. I'll get this pics and show you what its doing.
Do all of these firehawks do this? If say left out in the sun to long? Its as if the hood has faded and then started doing this.

You might be able to sand below the clear coat and reshoot the clear, but be very carefull, the base coat is not that thick, and you will break through if you are not extremely carefull.
Chances are, unless you are not that concerned with it, that the part of the hood that has the base coat exposed has faded considerably. This would cause a color variation.
And as far as shooting the hood, wait until first thing in the morning when the dew is still on the ground. Best time to shoot anything outside. The dew holds dust and dirt on the ground.

RED- 2002 FORMULA
The rear bumper started to peel on my bird. Finally gave up trying to go cheap and went to Maaco. They did a hell of a job and matched up paint.

Cheapest way to get a good job.
Heres what you do to save money and get a good job.Depending on how bad the clear is dictates the paper to use.If it's not too bad get some 3M black wet sand paper 320 grit is what I use on cars that aren't too bad. Any autoparts store or even walmart and a sanding block so you get a flat finish without finger grooves.
Spray bottles work good or a bucket and just use cup or whatever you have to keep splashing water on the hood. Keep the paper and hood wet. Sand off all the broken clear till you get into the paint, don't worry anout hitting primer. Sand about 6 or more inches out all aound the broken clear to make sure there isn't going to be more flaking off next to it. Then after take your paper and sand the rest of the hood but not as deep just till there is no shine left and it's all flat when you dry it.
After your hood is nice and smooth find a good shop, please no MACCO, and have them primer and repaint your you. Will save you money by doing all the prep work your self. Usually it's cheaper if you bring them just the hood, saves them from having to remove it or mask the car themselves.
I used to do this to my cars b4 getting them painted, now I have a shop I do it all.
Also I worked at a MAACO. NO NICE CARS SHOULD GO THERE, ONLY CARS YOU BUY FOR A $500 WINTERN BEATER.
