    Carbon Fiber Hoods

Anybody swapped out their stock hood for an ultra-light carbon fiber one? Any recommendations on brand? I own a 99 z28 and most of the hoods I have seen come with the SS hood scoop. Any ideas on where to hunt down one for a z28?

If you have installed one, is there anything in particular I should be looking out for?

    Thanks in advance.

carbon fiber is more towards the import/ rice scene. realistically you only save 50 pounds on average over stock, not much more than fiberglass. plus if not extremely expensive, it doesn't fit well. and unlike fiberglass, you can't really mold it to fit.

I really doubt it would look good, unless a trans am replaced every body panel with cf. that might look cool.

Oh and yeah, I would stick with fiberglass as far as the hood goes.. like speed said, the carbon fiber can't weigh much less than the fiberglass... I'd say mine weighs no more than 15 lbs.

If you want the look of carbon fiber, why not get a fiberglass hood covered in CF? I've been thinking about the possibilities of that for some tiny stripes along the sides of my scoops.

i would say leave the carbon fiber to the imports, i personally don't think they look right on our cars

I thought it might be ricey, but I thought I'd ask and get the consensus of the LS-1 community. I saw a member post a pic of his and it looked cool (my personal preferences), so I'll probably think this through for a while...thanks for the input.

    Pbbbbtttttthhhhh.
That's my input on the silly claims of CF being "rice" and not having extreme advantages over fiberglass. How about nitrous? Probably the most frequently used word in that community, does that make it rice? Just because stupid people acknowledge a good idea doesn't make the idea stupid.

for those guys saying it wont make that big of a diff... im not sure how much the fg hood weighs but cf hoods generally are about 5-10 lbs... no joke.. those things are lightweight like no other i would assume at least my hood being a ram air... it weighs roughly 25-30 at least... worth it no... but it does make a diff... plus on a camaro itd look cool on certain colors... i dont think it would ever look cool on a trans am

Would depend on which hood, though I don't think any fiberglass hood can be as light as a carbon fiber one. However, I do think that my hood which is fiberglass weighs more then the stock hood.

yeah i based all this on having no idea what stock weighs... but i hav carried cf hoods around... and te only difficult thing is the air catching it.. weight wise its amazing how light they are

My CF hood is 14 lbs with latch and lock attached, I've never, ever seen a fiberglass hood that wasn't a pin on weigh less than 20 lbs; actually, I just got off the phone with Jegs, and I can guarantee that. Is 6-10 lbs a big difference? No, but if you're going aftermarket, it's something to consider. And if you're going from a steel Z hood, it's one hell of a difference.

$520, plus another $250 for paint. I was skeptical about the idea, but it was around the same price as my next best options, so I went out on a limb, and I haven't looked back.

Did you get the underside of your hood painted? I have mine at the paint guy now.. I didn't wanna pay to get the underside painted but I think it will be ugly being that white color.
