I spent off and on 6 hours one Sunday afternoon polishing it... once 1 coat was polished out I let another set in and buffed it with a regular towel

yup put it on about 10 coats initially and rubbed it to black paste and used the towel to buff/take off. Then I applied heavy coats to a black paste and let it sit for half an hour.. then wiped/buffed it off.. for about 6 hours like that.
The Army is good for teaching you how to hand polish things lol. I once got in trouble in Basic Training for something I can't remember anymore...nothing big though.. it was 16 years ago.. and I had to polish a metal garbage can with brasso.. so the receiver dryer was nothing compared to the garbage can. lmao

When I did mine I used very fine steel wool on it first, then used Mothers.

All the aluminum parts can be polished easily by hitting them with steel wool first then Mothers.
