Why would you using rubbing compound? That is so abrasive.
How bad is it? I would start with http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/...roduct_Count=6Black 1999 Blown Convertible A4

Thats not so bad. Then you may want to use this to fill in the minor scratches.

Read over the site before ordering. The first application will take some time. Some won't/can't take the time to use it.
I use it on both my black vehicles and can't see any swirl marks.

I have a red car but I used z5, at first I was skeptical because I thought my paint looked hella good. But after using one coat of that it really does remove most of your swirls(in my case it did) but couldnt really tell on the tiny scratches but mine arent really noticable anyways

You could try a liquid wax over it to smooth it out. I usually use a hard wax, then a liquid wax to top it off. I use this stuff called liquid glass, its awesome, the body of the car actually feels smoother and softer after its used.

Try 3M polish on a very very soft wool buffer. That is what the shop I work for does with fine scratches and swirls. Only do a 1 foot area at a time. Smaller is better in this kind of situation. Most marks occur when we are in a hurry and trying to "wax" or polish too big of an area at once.

IMO the only way to remove swirls and not just hide/cover them up(covering up swirls is useless because once you wash the car they come right back) is to use a buffer with the proper pad and a good swirl removing polish followed by a finishing polish. My car had bad scratches and swirls (I bought the car used and I think the previous owner let people sit on the hood with buttons etc on their jeans-idiot!) and Menzerna super intensive polish followed by Menzerna Nano polish made my paint/clearcoat look new again. I used a white Lake Country 7" polishing pads for both steps with my Porter Cable 7424 buffer. I then followed up with a thin coat of Pinnacle Souveran paste wax. It looks like this now-

I use a buffer at the last resort. Because you are actually removing the clear coat to hide the scratches.
I would rather use Zaino to fill in the minor scratches.

First of all. Zaino does not have anything that will fill-in scratches. If you think they do, then you'd need to define "scratches" so we understand what you're talking about
The Z5 is advertised to fill-in swirls, and the results leave a lot to be desired. Not really a fill-in product as described. Very minimum on very light superficial swirls
The ZPC is a mild polish at best. It's to me a finish polish more than it is a paint-correction type polish. You could get some results with a buffer and an orange pad, but don't espect to be much of a contender against the f-body hard clearcoat

The amount of clear removed is very minimal if done correctly with the least aggressive polishing pad that you can get away with. This process takes the sharp edges off swirls/small scratches where they can't be seen. Like mentioned- the clear on F bodies is very hard.
