I have found it is nearly impossible to remove swirls by hand. The Porter Cable is the way to go. Just make sure you learn about it before you use it.

Collector Yellow (54U)- 2002 Trans Am CE
Over the weekend I tried Zaino PC (one of their newer products) on just my spoiler by hand and I did notice a big reduction in swirls. Although it didn't remove the swirls completely, it reduced them by about 60%. Put on a coat of Z2 over it and helped even more.
I think I will be moving onto a Porter Cable soon though. I just can't believe the awesome results you can get.
Good thing I've got my 99 Black T/A's hood to use as practice.

I used the Pinnacle XMT medium and light swirl remover with a "Lake Country" orange pad for the medium and a grey pad for the light swirl remover (on my PC)followed by a wax just for black cars called "Black Velvet". Worked really well on my car which is a 98 with original paint.
--also wanted to comment the absorber caused swirls on my car too-black cars swirl so damn easy!!

meguiars scratchx works if your doing this by hand.....the important thing about it is to make sure you spread the product to a certain area (not too big) and apply a good amount of pressure, say about 15lbs.
make sure to wash and claybar 1st though. after scratch-x'ing it then i would go for a #26 polish, then NXT
but the overall best way (IMO) is to get a DA (which is idiot proof), and bust out some #80, followed by #26, then NXT
that shit'll be blingin after that!
