sub troub
I have a rochford 1200 punch amp, and 2 alpine 10s, type s, and they have both decided to take a crap on me in the last month and i miss the bass they gave. So my question is, what would be a better 10" to go with that i can count on to take some abuse...

I kinda like Zapco I-force 10D's. There not to expensive on ebay either. Those, and Resonant Engineering SX's are both pretty good.

What about upgrading from my type S's.....
Features:
Power range 50-300 watts RMS (150 watts per coil)
Peak power handling 900 watts
Frequency response 26-1,000 Hz
Kevlar-reinforced pulp cone with aluminum finish
3/4" Santoprene rubber surround
Dual 2-ohm impedance
Stamped steel basket
Sensitivity 87 dB
Top-mount depth 6-1/4"
Sealed box volume: 0.85-1.5 cubic feet
Ported box volume: 1.25-2.0 cubic feet
to say the type R from alpine......
RMS Power Handling: 500 watts
Peak Power Handling: 1500 watts
Dual 2 Ohms Voice Coil Design
Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone
Custom Cast Aluminum Frame with Integrated Perimeter Venting and Heat Transfer Plate
Mirrored Progressive Nomex ® Spiders with Reinforced Layer Integrated Tinsel Leads
Compound Radius Curve (CRC) Motor Structure
Multi-Stage Thermal Management System
HAMR Surround and Concealed Mount Gasket
Aluminum Airflow Motor Cover
Insert Push Terminals with One-sided Layout
Bumped Backplate
Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry
Dual Stacked Magnets
Extra Length Extended Pole
Flared Pole Vent
High Strength Brass Voice Coil Bobbin
Magnetically Optimized Motor Structure (Pat. Pend.)
Oversized Parabolic Dustcap
Frequency Response: 26Hz – 500Hz
or would that do any good? I like the price on the Type R's. would it hurt to make bigger holes and fit 12"s?

It would depend on the box, but you should be fine if you went with 12s. I like the RE SX's. My friend has two of there 15" SX's and he hit 147db with em. Thats pretty impressive with only 2 15's.

08 Mustang GT/CS Blue- 2002 Trans Am WS6 traded
When i traded cars a couple months ago, i also did some stereo-swapping. I also like the RE SX as suggested above, and actually played it and an alpine type R for a couple of days. Similar price, and the RE is a heavier, bulkier speaker--seemed like it would take more abuse; but the type R was no sissy--sounded great. I ended up keeping my 5 year old eclipse 12's though... Spent the money on a new sub amp instead--replaced that 5 yr old amp.

I think im gonna give the Alpines a try, i can get them for 83 bucks versus the 200 for the RE's, would the dual 2 ohm be what i need, i have no idea what im talking about when it comes to amps and ohms, and all i know about my amplifier, is that its a Rochford Punch 1200...

Which amp is it? I'm sure Rockford Fosgate has made more than 1 1200 watt amp. I'd probably get DVC 4 ohm if they have em.

Now granted I get this correct (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), you should be able to bridge it for 400W RMS at 2 ohms, or 800W RMS at 1 ohm. Its the same thing, just depends on what way your speakers are wired. 1 ohm, 2 ohm, etc. I'd just get the DVC 4 ohm and wire them for 1 ohm.

I have no idea what im talking about with ohms, so whats better more or less and how do you wire them differently?

From what I've been told, always wire for 1 ohm if possible. Just look for a diagram. I think Rockford Fosgates website has some pretty good diagrams and such on how to wire for 1 ohm with two DVC 4ohm speakers. Then you just gotta bridge your amp.

Ok im going with the Alpine Type R's but what do i want 2 ohm or 4 ohm? Once they get here i will just have the local radio shack guy tell me what to do and go from there

Yea both 2 and 4 DVC same price, which is better for what im looking at?

careful...not all amps are stable to 1 or 2 ohms bridged; meaning they will overheat and cut off--and since your amp specs don't list 1 ohm capabilities i suspect it falls into this category. so 2 ohms would be the goal; get the dual 2 ohm subs. by wiring each coil on the individual sub in series, each individual speaker will be 4 ohms. Wire the two speakers in parallel and the end result is 2 ohm; which matches max power output from your amp. hard to show without picture if you are unfamiliar with terms...

This is how they are wired now, if this helps any. They were put in by previous owner, he had a electronics shop put them in so im assuming this is correct.
