Speakers and Sub sans new HU?

I want to improve my girlfriend's stereo in her '03 Tracker but I don't want to spend the $ on a new head unit. I know it's not an LS1 vehicle but I've gotten lots of good input from the regulars in this forum.

Would 4 aftermarket 6.5" speakers all around and an amplified bass tube drawing signal from the rear speakers be worth the expense without buying a new headunit?

I was thinking just basic 2-way full range speakers and the 6" amplified Audiobahn tube.

While I'm sure that would work wonders, it's not exactly inexpensive. That's the whole point.

I really just want to know if it's worth it to bother modding the stereo w/o changing the head unit.
