Also, best place to get one. Ebay is pretty cheap, as well as J&R.com

Yup! I got a Garmin C330, does way more than I had hoped for. When it came out in Spring 2005, it was about $950. I bought it last March and paid $269, I have seen them recently advertised for $250. Love the portability, and a review I read said it was Garmin's answer to the Tom Tom. Easy to use, my wife said we did not need one, but she uses it more than I do.

I will have to look up the Garmin. It comes with all the maps though right? I am also looking for one that has the satellite downloads for traffic and weather. I forgot to mention that

I sell GPS where I work and Garmin is the best... They've been in navigation way longer than the other guys and they are the most accurate brand. Another tip I have is when you go to buy one, say in a shop, ask about price matching and ask them to check their competitors websites.

Yes, all USA, Canada and some Mexico I believe. You kinda get used to it knowing the local streets and alleys, but when you travel to a different city it is new all over again!
Mine does not have the traffic and weather, I don't need that. Others, more expensive, do that tho. I don't know if that requires any subscription fee. One thing I really like is no subscription fees!

I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 350 and love it. It has got me out of a jam or 2 thats for sure. I was sold on geting one when I met my brother up in Maine when we had a family reunion. He has a tom tom 910 and it got us everywhere. I liked his tom tom but it was real bulky and big, My garmin is more portable and is the size of a deck of cards. I got mine on e-bay and you'll have a hard time finding one any cheaper. Even walmart sold the same one I bought for over $100 more than I paid plus you had to pay tax.
My advice to you is shop around, read reviews and don't be in a hurry. The Garmin Nuvi 350 has the best reviews by experts and people like myself than anyother portable nav system. Rated one of the tops in consumer reports.
Tom toms are nice but I.M.O.P garmins are better, smaller, have more features, been around longer, and the mounting system for the window is 10x better. My brothers tom tom mount broke within hours of ownership and they are close to $40 for a new one. The tom toms are just to bulky and big.
Hope this helps

I recently got one myself, Magellan Roadmate 600T. You can see a pic of it on my Fquick site. This one is a bit pricey if you just want the basics. But being in Seattle I rely on the instant traffic updates. The Garmin 350 is a great choice for the cost, seriously Jay00ss is giving you decent advice about it. Search Ebay, Overstock and places similar. Check out the features, most offer similar services, features etc. Keep notice on screen size and so on, one of the things I love about mine is the Locate feature, displays direction, altitude, speed, local features (food, gas, etc) Most have something similar, mine has bluetooth so when my phone rings it just pops up on the display ( incoming number etc) most will have traffic features like avoid highways, shortest route, fastest time, distance etc. Or things like the ability to store and recall places you went. I don't know how I got around without it now that I have one.

Thank you everyone for your input, that definatly helps. Funny, the garmin was the first one I pulled up when I started looking. I know garmin has been in the business a long time. I am one who tends to go with trusted names. BUT the TomTom I was looking at is about the size of a deck of cards, and fits in your shirt pocket. Something like that would be perfect for me. Again, thank you for you input, its greatly appreciated

The trafic option is a paid option that warns you of traffic hot spots or construction and gives you an alternate faster route.
you can use the portable gps like my Garmin nuvi 350 in any car. It has its own built in antenna. It plugs into your 12 volt outlet (cigarette lighter) and comes with a winshield suction cup mount that removes easily.
Mine is simple to use, all touch screen actions, all you do is type the address in, and the thing tells you right how to get there. Warns you of the upcomeing turn, corrects itself if you actually do miss the turn off. Its real easy to use and a perfect tool if you do a lot of traveling.
The thing I really like about mine is it will find the nearest points of interest (I think they all do this) but you have options to find the nearest gas station, hospital, restaurant, parks etc.... its great for going out on adventures.
The gps helped me out on our last cruise here in Colorado. We ended up seperateing, I didn't know the route and useing my Nav system I was the only one that hit the right route and everyone ended up following me. The guy that new the route ended up missing the turn but My gps warned me of the upcomeing roads and was able to navigate the course.
Hope this helps
