    are my subs blown?

i had a set of jl 8's in my sail panel, then they started making this popping sound during hard hits. one started doing it during any hit. i got a set of kicker 8's in the mail, and they do the exact same thing, only they pop all the time unless the gains are turned way down, then you really can't hear anything. any ideas?

amp mabey. If the pop more than likely the amp has died and is sending raw voltage to the coils. If you move the cones manually and carfully you can tell is they are bad by feel. If they don't move smoothly and you feel a rough spot mabey even hear it the drive coil is cooked.

The popping noise is the voice coil hitting the back plate where the pole piece is mounted. (not good) you have exceeded the maximum mechanical travel of the suspension. You are overpowering the speaker or the speaker is in a wrong enclosure design for this speaker. Most likely being overpowered.

the amp is new. i've had it a about 3 months or so. the jl's pop at relatively high volume, the kicker's do it right away. however, the jl's are 8 ohm, while the kickers are 4. i have the rca's running down the passenger side, don't know if that matters. the amp is grounded to the passenger side rear seatbelt. the power cable is 8guage. the speaker wires are 14g. i had the gains turned basically all the way down. and the kickers still popped.

so to double check, i wired the subs to my home stereo sub out put, and got the popping still with the kickers, while the jl took a much higher volume to pop. when i had it hooked up off of the head unit, there was never any popping. could it really be the amp or wiring?

the amp is a 600 watt 4 ch. i had the two subs bridged on the 3/4 channel. i doubt it's over powered. the gains aren't turned up that much.

I will admit am know very little about car audio especially subs, but have you checked the polarity of the wires feeding the subs, is the amp bridged? you may also have a sloppy set of subs. The routing of the wires make little difference in terms of signal strength nad more in the way of noise. How about he HU eq and "bass boost" if these a turned on or way up it is possible that you are over amplifying the signal.

yes, i cut the plastics enough to clear. even when the subs are out of the car, they still pop. but i don't feel any restrictions<--sp? on the drivers when i lightly press on them.

How many watts are you feeding to each sub?

What is the rms rating for your subs?
