    Kenwood head units

I need to replace my el cheapo Jensen head unit, which has started skipping like crazy, and won't even play many mp3's. I'm looking at replacing with a Kenwood head unit, will these perform decently? I'm just looking for basic good performance, I have a scosche adapter using the stock Bose system.

    I had a Excelon KDC-X692 and I sold it.
I could not get decent acoustics out of it, no matter what I tried.
I upgraded the stock speakers to Clarion and Pioneer, still nothing.
    Installed Pioneer Tweeters, still nothing.
I could not get enough treble or bass out of the head unit. It sounded like a general old Delco stereo - muffled, dull, and distorted.
You can fiddle with the speaker settings and EQ all you want. Mine sucked.
Mabee it was a lemon, but I can't say I'll buy another one.

I also had a Kenwood X10D amp that I sold - that was a turd too.
The design was so crappy, that the nice display cover RATTLED when you turned the bass up. SO the only way to get rid of the rattle was to remove the cover - and the amp is no where near what the ratings were showing.
Supposed to have a Dual Torroid power supply section - open it up and SUPRISE! single puny power torroid.
Old School Kenwood's were much better. I can't say the same for Todays.

I have had very good luck with Pioneer Head Units, as they are generally built well, and are acoustically correct.

The DEH-P800PRS is what I was looking at mainly for the Burr-Brown DAC's for SQ. It was a MAJOR bummer that this top notch model does not include USB. You have to purchase an adapter for the usb functionality.
The other thing is, the higher end models look more complicated. Mabee I'm getting to be an old fart...but I like my radio to have Lots of features, however a simple easy layout.

Ive got the Pioneer DEH-P77DH in my truck, for 8 or so years now.
They still sell it, and for a simple good sounding radio, I love it.
It doesn't have USB...but...does it have Excellent sound, that's adjustable.
Honestly, Its a bit expensive, but it's also durable and should play for years.
So its worth the $250~ odd.

I've got a PAC SWI-JACK Steering wheel control module from my Prix that I'll list in the for sale section if anybody wants it.

If you want to save some cash Try:

    1. Cleaning the head unit - it probably has too much dirt on the laser lense

    2. Do you have a back support strap or pin installed so it can't bounce around? Mabee wear on your suspention has caused the radio to go into resonance under road vibration.

Oh, and the URL's referenced are Dead Said Fred.
