    jl speaker install question

so before i fuck up these new JL's that i just got. i want to mount them in the front. i was wondering, could i use a cross over? hook the inputs from the amp and the head unit into the input of the crossover, and then go from there, or am i gonna have to do like others have done with the alpines? and cut the wires for the tweeter, and hook them up to the head unit. later down the road, i plan to get rid of the monsoon H.U. i get the jist of HOW to do it, but i just want to make sure that it's correct, before i hackem up.
