Installed Rear View Mirror with Comp/Temp
I want to share a mod I did to my car. It looks good IMO better than stock. This is something GM should have done to our cars. I have seen kits for over $250.00 or more but did not want to spend that much. I went to the junk yard and got this one from a 98 Tahoe. I bought a e-brake handle for the SS and mirror for $20. While there I got the temp sensor as well at a great price. Now the problem was how to make it work?? lol
After looking for a way to make it work I have it installed. I am will miss the lights on the other mirror.. Thanks for looking everyone..

its simple to do.. it comes with 7 cables but you only need 4.. power/ground/ and 2 for the sensor.

How to install rear view mirror with temp/compass and auto dim..
3 things you will need to make this work
1.- mirror
2.- stock harness
3.- temp sensor
You can buy this kit for $300 or more with the sensor temp. IMO thats alot.
You can find the same mirror on some gm models 95 to 02. The one i have is from a 98 tahoe,
I got my sensor from a 2000 Chrysler Concorde.
The mirror model is 7 pin GNTX-177.
The first thing I did was find a place for the sensor..
I put mine behind the drivers side headlight
You can mount it anywhere you like on the front. Make sure the sensor is not exposed to sunlight. If it does the temperature readings will be incorrect. Also don't not place it close to the engine.
With the sensor in place time to run the cables to the inside of the car.
This is how I did mine
I ran the cables on the side of the engine bay on the drivers side. I ran it close to the air pump hose.
Here on this pic you can see the 2 wires coming from the engine bay to the side pillar.
This pic shows where I got the power from.
It turns on when the switch is open.
The red wire is for the gauges. the green wire that is attached to the red one is for the mirror. the other green wire is for the ground.
This pic shows the connector has 7 cables. You will only use 4 of them. The first 2 wires and the last two wires. The 3 cables in the middle can be removed. i did it the lazy way but you can pull the pins off. I could not find the way to do it lol..
1.- pink = power
2.- black = gound
6.- dark green/black =temp sensor
7.-brown temp sensor
Once you have the power and ground connected run the wire through the roof close to the winshield on the top. I used black tape and zip ties to put the 4 wires together. That makes it not look so messy
Heres a pic when it was plugged in. This is how it looks from the back. You cant really see it unless you pay to much attention to it.
So once the the wires are connected to the temp sensor, power, and ground are connected, you should be good to go.
open the switch it should start, if it doesnt check your wires again, mine worked perfect. before you hide the cables make sure everything works fine, check the connections make sure you use black electrical tape, once you make sure everyting is fine hide the cables and your good to go..
i skipt some steps here, like how to remove the old mirror and old that, any questions just ask.. im not a profesional, so i just did it for those of you who want to get it done.,
forgot to mention.. when you cut the cables from the mirror.. just cut the most cable you can, and the go to the front of the car and cut the temp sensor.
if you through the wiring your gonna spend all day there and having a hard time doing it.. is not worth it..
heres is the final product, i was told i had to re-program the temp and compass features, i didnt have to do that, i compare it to my jeep it was only one degree off difference on my jeep. the compass was fine too..
i hope this helps..sorry if im not so detail, or its hard to read,.. like i said, questions just ask.. i probably forgot something here...
thanks for lookingLast edited by Z28Thunder; 08-12-2011 at 09:23 PM.
