help with system
I installed stereo four years ago and have never experienced a problem until recently.
I have a Alpine Head Unit (xm ready), PPI 4125 amp, Utopia 6.5's, one JL-10w3. Added XM module 1 year later (installed under drivers seat).
This weekend, I checked my sub wires, my sub, and redid my amp ground wire (to the car, and to the amp).
I am getting a intermitent interference in my sub. What is the problem? Circuit City actually installed the HU and I am sure they used factory ground. Could that be the problem? I am not a stereo expert and have enjoyed my system over the years and am now getting frustrated.
Thanks.

Can you give a description of what exactly this "interference" sounds like?

Sounds like static in the sub with volume at zero. Hope that helps.....it is not constant, just when I thought I fixed it....the sound came back...thats why I thought I would ask for help.
Thanks

When subs start to go out, i've always had a "static" sound at low volumes whenever the sub would hit. If i turned it up, the static goes away, but eventually the sub would go out. I beleive in my case it had something to do with the voice coil going out. Dunno if that applies in your case

make sure the RCA and power are on different sides, make sure the RCA cables dont have a cut or anything on them (a friend ran a trim screw threw his RCA and grounded it). check the ground.
Does it get louder when you rev it?

Could be RCAs, or RCA locations, or just bad HU preouts.. When the non-fading level/sub preout volume is lower -- you aren't getting the full XX Volts of the preouts - so it is more susceptible to nouice -- which goes away as you turn it up because you are increasing the pre-out voltage, and higher pre-out voltages have greater immunity to noise. Try resetting gains on your amp and be sure that bass boost, all EQ options are off and turn the non-fading / sub preout level on your HU all the way up.

if you never had the problem before you redid your ground wire, then i think you probably just have a bad ground connection.
