Before Chris Van Ry got into custom cars, he started playing musical instruments and bought his first home stereo system when he was 13. So the transition into car audio was quite natural. Although the audio happened first before the car. He says that his first stereo sat in boxes for six months before his first car was in the driveway.

He started off with a '98 Mustang GT, at 18, which got a full intake and exhaust package. That was his first experience with Focal and Audison in "six or seven different configurations". It was followed by a 2007 Mazdaspeed6, which got an AudioControl LC6i factory deck interface, Alpine PXAH701, a set of Focal Power Series amps and a trio of 27KX 11" subs. Ultimately, though, he has settled on his Chevy S10 Xtreme, which he says, "remains my baby, and my showpiece".

The source for the system is an Alpine CDA-9815 with equalization handled by AudioControl's DQT and crossovers by the AudioControl DXS. Further processing goes through the Overdrive line driver and the Epicenter. The frontstage consists of the Focal Polyglass 165 V2, with the drivers in the doors and tweeters flushed, almost mid-way up, into the A-pillars. An Alpine TME-M790 F#1 Status DVD player in the dash supplies the video for the A/V system. There's also a DHA-S680 DVD changer in the center console. The nav system is in the bed of the truck.

The dash heavily modified to house the two flushed-in single-din decks. The dash was retextured to match factory finish. The speaker grilles were removed and redone as molded Focal logos. And of course, prior to the installation of the products, the vehicle interior was covered in Cascade Audio Engineering sound deadening, with VB2, VB3 and deflex pads for midbass in the doors.

The real highlight of the vehicle is the amprack and subwoofer enclosure in the back. In order to accommodate part of the elaborate system, the jump seat was removed for the Monster capacitor. And you'll see in one of the pics in the gallery that the storage pocket in third door was removed for the etched mirror system diagram. There are three Focal Polyglass 27V2 11" subs behind the beautifully fabricated amprack and the flashy stack of Audison amps, the LRx 2.150, the LRx 2.250 and an LRx 1.400. The first amp runs the tweeters, the second, the speakers in the doors and the third provides the power for the subwoofers. Monster Cable was the product of choice for wiring and interconnects. You have 0 AWG Monster for power and ground, XLN Pro braided and shielded RCAs, Big 3 Upgraded, 10awg Braided speaker wire across all channels. Under the hood Optima Red Top battery supplies the juice.

Chris has won Best Sport truck, at Driven to Perform in Calgary, AB from 2004 to 2008 (4 years straight), USACi regional PRO SQ 2nd place in 2009, and then placing 1st in 2010.

With this type of customization you really need some security. Chris went with the CompuStar 2W8000fmas 2-way alarm starter combo. It also provides control over interior accent lighting, the smoke machine (!), and exterior stobe lights.

In the future the truck will get the Focal Utopia Be No. 6 component set, an iPad and Clarion's DRZ9255. Chris plans a run on the world finals next year. Beyond that he wants to add more horsepower. Currently the performance mods are the Shorty headers, 3-inch exhaust and Vortech Supercharger. Complementing that on the cosmetic side are the billet grilles, chrome Shorty antenna, the tonneau cover, the Clear headlights, corners and new taillights.

Chris thanks Focal & Orca Design for all the support, his friends for helping make this nearly year-long build happen, and his wife, of course, "for putting up with my severe audio habits, and all the weekends lost to shows and competitions".
