What does this do?

I had to replace the alternator and battery today and when i looked at the fuses there was this fuse that had a burn mark on it, its one of the big fuses and it says Engine Cont Relay does anyone know what this thing does and could have this burned up my alternator?

I think it powers up coils and engine management sensors.....i don't THINK it would effcet the starter, but if it controls the turn on signal for the altenator, it could take out the battery and low voltage from the battery could burn up the starter.
are you getting any check lights?

Okay sorry i don't know why i put starter in there but it was my alternator that i replaced, and it was fried it even started smoking when we tried to jump the car.
