just wondering what the widest tire size i could fit on the stock 17" wheels on my goat

The widest that is recommended by tire manufacturers for the stock 8-inch wide wheel is the 245. You can probably go to a 255 in the rear (not the front) without any problems. But if you want anything wider, you will have to go to a wider wheel. There are strut rub problems in the front with wider tires, so be careful. I have 275/35ZR18's on the rear of my 05 goat, but they are on 9-inch wide Intro wheels with a high 55mm offset. In general, you should use a lower offset in front, such as 40mm, and a larger offset in the rear if you want to go with larger rubber. Study up before you buy.

I have 275-40-17's on my stock wheels with NO problems at all.

Yes I'm running Mickeys275/40/17 Drag Radial ET's that have a wider section width than the last 275/40/17 I had. Had to do some grinding on the lip to get clearence...... But no big deal. They work awsome. I'm doing 1.6 60 foots with stock tq. convertor so I can't complain.
