rear end loud noise
Hey guys, last couple days, when my car gets warmed up, driving down the road, there is a random popping in the rear end, stoping and starting again does it real bad. its very loud and can actually feel it sometimes. any idea what it is. read a few things saying to change the fluid out, any other advice would be great.

Dead/dieing 10-bolt. Time for a 12-bolt or a 9in.

Are you sure the noise is from the housing itself, and not a suspension-related issue? I'd start checking suspension components like LCA's, Panhard rod, sway bar and so on. I'd also check where the torque arm mounts to the rear-end.

We need more info. Such as:
Mileage
Is it a popping noise? Or a clunking noise?
Is the rear end howling while driving?
You could have a bad/worn cradle bushing or differential bushing or U-joint that is transmitting the noise into the cabin. Put the car on a lift and change out the fluid and get back to us. Remember 75-140 SYNTHETIC with some friction modifier added to it.
Another thing: Is the rearend leaking where the drive shaft goes in? Around where the half shafts go in? Check your half shaft bolts as well.

Its got 65k miles on it, and its more of a popping sound. had it up on the lift earlier today, and didnt see any leaking as far as i could tell. as far as the howling, and i have not heard any whining or howling when driving. ill be doing the fluid this weekend, and ill post up if anythign changes.

Ok. Good to hear. Give us a shout if you need anything else. Sounds like your rearend fluid was breaking down causing the clutches in the diff to chatter.

I have a similar problem as well..I have changed my diff...oil and still the same...mine is more like a thud...I can certainly feel it...coming to a stop...sometimes I feel it from the rear and sometimes from the front...I always thought it might be. Something with the transmission cause I. Feel the thud sometimes when it downshifts..clueless on what could be causing it..
A mechanic told me it could be the rear shocks...changed those out...and th same thud...anyone know what it can possibly be?

04-06 GTOs run 75-140 and I believe a pint of friction modifier as required by GM. I believe GM has since discontinued the friction modifier but there is something called TRU GEAR by, I believe, CRC.
Pmolina- have you checked the rubber bushings that connect the driveshaft to the trans and diff?
