Phantom Black- 2004 GTO
I currently have this same problem. It seems that the slave cylinder inside the transmission is leaking. The only way to get to it is to drop out the tranny. I'm thinking I should just go ahead and replace the clutch while everythings apart. It sounds like the LS7 clutch is a good upgrade. Any advice?

sound almost like the clutch isnt engaging at all, very wierd, what i would is call a local tranny shop, say you cant drive it in and wont tow it, tell them what its doing and see if they tell you what they think it is, my 2 cents

Have you cleaned the clutch fluid from the reservoir under the hood? Our cars tend to cause the fluid for the clutch to turn black after a while. You have to take a turkey baster and suck out as much of the old black fluid as possible and replace with fresh DOT 4 fluid. Hopefully it isn't internal or the trans has to be dropped and inspected for a faulty slave cylinder, line or throwout bearing.

Was this the dealer who quoted you $1k? Check out the local speed shops in your area and ask for a quote from them. Could possibly be cheaper. If not, then you're gonna have to start saving $$$$.

Labor rate for-the-loss. On our cars, not hard at all from what I hear. The crossmember has to be dropped as well as the midpipes. I can't remember if there are 6 or 8 bolts holding the trans to the motor. You also have to unbolt the starter.
I suggest you try the speed shop idea. ESPECIALLY if they are well versed in GM and our cars. They may be cheaper rate-wise.

cammed, I followed your advice and got a lot of black chunks and black fluid out of the reservior and all is clean. But my best guess is the slave has gone out. Hopefully the clutch is still good. Good luck

Yah. I had a feeling the OPs dilemma was the slave. Ouch!! Hopefully he can get to a performance shop that can fix his car for less money. Hell, I don't even take my car to the dealer anymore. I take it to the shop that dynoed mine and it is less than what dealers charge. The only time I will have to take my car to the dealer will be for a cluster swap as mine has a black spot where the odometer is.

Yea I fix my own stuff, it's a pain but I will do it myself if I can. The slave has to much heat to close and is hard on it. Get the part, drop the trans, check the clutch and replace, and your suck out the black shit is cheap insurance. BTW it may take me a week to do it but I'm old!!!!!!!
