Well, shorty's are the way to go for ease of installation, and to remain smog compliant in CA.

Long tubes will give you better gains, and will perform better.

you can run your stock cat back, as the cat forward will be headers/mid pipes.

For the price your going to pay for shorties though, about 650-700 you could have Pacesetter (ceramic coated) long tubes, 520 (with mids) or Kooks for about 850-1000 depending on the mid pipes... also, Stainless works are about the same price as Kooks as well.

If you go catless you will either need a predator, or a tune, but a tune is always recommended when going with headers to maximize the gains.

    Hope this helps

JBA makes a really good quality shorty style header. And NO you don't have to get it re tuned but YES you would see more of as gain if it was re tuned with the new exhaust.
What is on it for mufflers now?
If you go full length they do hang down more than stock so if you have a lowered car and depending on where you live take that into consideration.
Do you plan on the car staying N/A as in no power adders?
Depending on your plans that should be the deciding factor on header size choice.
Kooks are a VERY high quality header. All I can say is you get what you pay for. If you do some scouting in the other area of this forum you'll see some other threads about headers and some issues others have had with Ebay headers lately.
Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

if you going to put headers on do the long tubes why spend the money on the shorties they are not worth the money the ls2 gto had a great flowing factory exhaust, long tubes will pick you up around 15-30 rwh with a good tune ,heres a pic of mine they are stainless works..
