1966 Pontiac 2 Plus 2 - Breaking Barriers With Big Brother

With Everyone Building A GTO Or Trans Am, Steven Heitbrink Decided To Take The Path Less Traveled With His Barrier Blue '66 2+2In 1966, the idea of a big engine in a big car wasn't anything new. Pontiac had been doing it since the '50s, and doing it well. The division already shook things up when it decided to shove a big engine into a mid-size car to give us the GTO in 1964. It enamored baby boomers with its combination of great looks, big power, and light weight.

Wow, does that 2+2 bring back memories. When I was 15 of 16 I saw an ad for the 1965 2+2 in a car mag and just had to get one. I worked all I could at a local car wash after school and on weekends and managed to save $1000 over the next year. My father had previously agreed that he would buy the car if I saved that much. He probably never thought that I would. Well, he kept his part of the agreement and we bought a leftover 1965 black on black convertible. It only had a three speed manual and the base 338 hp engine, but it was gorgeous. The total cost of the car including tax was $3150. Boy, do I wish I still had that car. And the 1967 GTO convertible and the 1970 Ram Air IV GTO and the 1972 Trans Am and the 1973 Trans Am. I will be keeping my 2005 GTO until I can't drive anymore.
