My 5.0 vs LS1 Z28
The opponent: 'vert Z28 (assumed auto b/c how it took off and the way the guy was driving). Had a passenger (his son?) Combined weight estimated at 420# give or take 20#.
Me: My 5.0, me, 1/2 tank of gas
The race 75punch with me in 4th at about 4-4400rpm IIRC to 6500rpm on my tach (about 110mph).
He got the jump by 1 car and then pulled 1 car and then I stopped his pull and we were dead locked for the rest of the race. I was highly dissapointed that he didn't keep pulling. It makes me doubt my own LS1, but I have a M6 hard-top and he DID have a passenger so my LS1 should perform better...I dunno, still odd that I deadlocked him after his initial jump.

I can say from experience an Ls1 would eat me up on top end. I am set up for the 1/4 anyway. I Bet a Maxima would beat me from a 55 punch. I think my car only goes about 125mph anyway. Cut that triple digit highway speed bullshit out before you kill someone. Keep it red light to red light bro.

Someone wanted mods in my other thread too...here they are in this one.
GT40P .030 heads
MAC shorties
BBK O/R X-pipe
575 Demon Carb
6AL ignition
ProBillet distributor
TKO500 tranny
4.10's
re-enforced tq-boxes
Steeda SFC's
UPR tubular upper/lowers
2.75" Cowl hood
LX tail lenses
Porsche red/black paint done in Mach 1 scheme
FRPP strut-tower brace
Aluminum 1.6 RR's
Probe forged Flat-tops
X303 cam
est. 10.5:1 comp ratio
89' speedo- cluster with 140mph guage
Underdriven Crank
17" stainless flex-fan
50/50 Lakewood shocks
4-way AGX struts
Force II dumped pre-axle
Holley 110gph fuel-pump
King Cobra clutch
Billet steel flywheel
New block (all internals are new as is the block, 302 ci, not a 306.)
Edelbrock RPM Performer manifold (carbed)
Fuel Pressure REgulator (set at 7psi) forgot what brand
FRPP Aluminum DS
3-core brass radiator
I am sure I have left some stuff out, but there are the basics.
(244whp/262 wtq w/AF at 13:1 if you were wondering. Peak tq at about 3500 and peak hp close to 6K)
With the 7K rpm chip in the car "nosing over" just doesnt happen. Not the typical 5.slow powerband.
My 6-speed WS6 will pull it pretty well though. The only way I "hung" with the Z28 was 'vert, auto, passenger.

Oh heres your other thread.
Curious...why would you go from something newer (LS1) to something older? A carbed mustang?

I had a 95 TA, sold it and built the 5.0 (it was EFI, swapped to carb for tunability). Then gave the 5.0 to my dad and now have a http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45424 . I am just doing some work on the 5.0 for dad and am in it while it hibernates for a while.

im surprised u hung with him...this is why i cant stand 5.0's (no offense) look at that mod list and still cant break over 250rwhp....also considering in my opinion they are the ugliest looking attempted sports car that has ever been produced...nothin can make these cars look good, sorry im not tryin to bash you, i just think 5.0's are pathetic, and yes i knows theres a bunch that will hand me my ass, but theres more that wont

I was never a fan either. Bought one anyway. I had to see if it was easy to get them in the 13s without doing a lot of shit. I accomplished that task.
In the long run, the motor was pretty damn strong. I had a 94 convertible 5-speed GT, so weight wasnt on my side, but I still got it into 13s with no cam swaps or slicks/DRs. Not a lot of shit on the car broke as far as maintenance went. In fact, less shit broke.
I mention 13s cuz consider our competition now. Fucking imports. I think my 94 gt is better looking that 88-93 GTs, but I dont think imports looks better than either of those GTs. Plus, they sound good and get decent mileage.
Dont get me wrong, I think the f-bodies got it made.

I believed they are a down graded engine too. Something like 215hp.
Whats funny is that their interior from 94 didnt change hardly at all until 05. A decade of the same shit.
Then again, the same can be said for f-bods.

for a 5.0 to keep up with an LS1 it HAS to be HIGHLY modded..i ran a guy a few days back that had a 5.0 with a Long list of mods and we ran from a 10mph roll and I pulled on him by about 2 cars and he said he had about $6000 invested in it

BlackZ-- The thing about the Mustangs is that the power to weight ratio, their efficiency to put the power to the ground (Fox body), and relatively cheap to build. I have about 15 grand in my car (car included and runs high 10's all day long). When I got the car a little over a year ago, it was bone stock other than an H pipe, 3.73's and a BBK CaI. It put down 206 rwhp and ran 13.90's. You just dont need 500rwhp in these cars to hand Ls1's their ass. Even though I will always love Ls1's (motor puts down amazing power), the set up to make a mustang go fast was easier for me to build.

I bet the Z28 was stock. It was a rag-top
3500# car....
400# (driver and passenger)
100# gas and/or anything in the car
He probably makes 290whp. (auto stock LS1)
My car made 244whp and weighs about 3500# with me and gas...500# and 50whp difference...I think that the race went EXACTLY! as it should have.

Eeecks. 244? I'd do some checking on your combo - tune, springs, etc. My old 5.0 made 278 RWHP with ported stock heads, ported stock intake, a good cam, and typical bolt-ons. Stock short block. Went 11.9s on slicks at ~3150 lbs.

That 244 was with the dyno operator cutting me short a few hundred rpm too...also with a fixed 17" flex fan, heavy ass TKO500 tranny, and 4.10's. I would have had a hair more. I dont even know if that is SAE corrected or not even. The guy was not the sharpest with his equipment.
