    98Z28 vs 68SS

So walking out of Walmart with my girlfriend when all of a sudden a Beautiful 68 Camaro SS rolls up to wait and pick someone up. The car is LOUD and i get Very excited because i by chance had the camaro out that night. So my gf and I run to my camaro and get it. Coming down the parking lot we see the SS leaving Walmart and i follow him, enticed by his loudass exhaust. We get to a light with two left-turn lanes leading to a long staright, and i pull up on the inside lane next to him. The light turns green and we take the gun, and all of a sudden he FLOORS it. I respond and take off after him. Shifting into second, i catch him, then start pulling on him. Shifting into third i reach a length plus. I reach 110 and hit the brake, around a car a a half ahead and be blows by me. I'm a big fan of the old school muscle cars so i follow him for a while until he pulls into a wawa and i get out to talk to him and he does likewise. He tells me he has a 355 with around 500 hp, Flowmaster with 40 Series mufflers, and a 4-speed. So i'm thinking, how the hell did i pull on this guy? Did i just shift better? Even if i did, he still should have caught my rather stock camaro. Then i look inside his car....His wife, two twin 7 year old boys, and his golden retriever...WOW. Maybe weight was in issue lol.

    On your ass flashing
    my highbeams

From what I have noticed most of the older folks talk about hp at the crank rather than at the wheels.
    What are your mods?

It sounded wide open to me.

It was a camaro SS, sorry i didn't mention

Yeah he never specified it it was 500 to the wheels.

I have a Centerforce stage 2 clutch, aluminum flywheel, B&M shift kit, LM1 cat back(not installed at time of race), koni single adjustable shocks in front and bilsteins in the back, reinforced sway bars, whisper lid, a smooth bellows, and i have 3.73 gears on the way to my house at the moment.

He probably didn't want to get too much on it with his whole family in the car...

Just because he said 500 HP doesn't mean he actually had it. In fact, though 500 HP is certainly possible out of a smallblock 350, they aren't typically real streetable or common.

And he was racing with 2 young kids in the car, so I would immediately question his intelligence, maturity, or both - thus its quite possible he had much less power.

My buddies 69 camaro has 383 stroker with 540 hp, can't get traction as he insist with driving with BFG radials on 15 x 8.
My 72 is a 4 sp 400 hp 350 and I have 15 x 10 BFG radial 295/60 and I have traction issues. I will race newer cars if the timing is right( clear road, etc.) knowing I will lose most of the time but do it for fun for both parties involved. It's cool as long as the guy in the faster car isn't a d-bag.

A old school 350 with 500 hp I doubt it. You don't see that often.

WTF are you guys talking about, 500crank hp is not hard to make with a 350. And old school, what does that mean? Cause it has a carb doesnt mean it cant make power or is old school. And who said he has the orig 350? 90% of the drag cars at the track have carbs and pushrods and make huge power. Hell there are crate 350s with 500+hp, the zz520 is a turnkey 520hp 350.

lol 68 camaro is, but everyone is saying i dont think a old school 350 can make 500crank hp blah blah. The car is old school, that doenst mean the 350 in it cant make power.

Which is why he probably just had a crate engine dropped in that said it had 500hp like soo many car guys do.

Agree 500 HP out of an "old school" 350 is not hard. the LT1 was rated 360 Hp from the factory back in the day, cam swap, alum. heads will easliy get you 500. I'm not an engine builder so I will refrain from arguring about. Anyhow the original post\story was cool to read.
