    They didn't make a 2003 Z-24

Sorry to burst your bubble friend, but production of Z-24s ceased in 2002. You may have raced a 2003 LS Cavalier with Z-24 badges or a 2002 Z-24, but if your SS is stock (rated at 180hp) there is no way you would beat a Z-24 even if it was stock (rated at 150hp) because of the weight differential. Your SS weighs in excess of 3400 lbs whereas the Z-24 is a nice and trim 2700 lbs. A simple hp to weight ratio will tell you that all else being equal your SS will not beat a REAL Z-24. Of course that doesn't account for driver error or traffic, etc. which may have happened here. I'm not calling you a liar, just that your facts are cloudy.

    ^^ what he said.

Owned a 96 non turbo quad motor 5spd z24 myself.

Without a turbo it would wipe the floor with a stock 87 SS monte..

My LQ1 powered z-34 would too though it was tuned to do so.

Good kill though. The turbo cavi prolly needed a tune and/or a new driver.

    Back from the dead.

I've always liked the 80s Monte SS.

It got my interest since I'm gonna drive my rain car today, a 1990 Z24. It leaps off the line, then dies over 4500 RPM. It's like a diesel.

    There's no such thing as a 1990 z34.. 91-94 for the gen1's.. All gen 1 z34's came with the LQ1 only,, 7000+ rpm all day.;D

^^^dude. read post number 13 again lol. That makes 2x you've made a mistake on this thread, and once for me!

I did have a customer that brought his Pontiac Grand Prix in, with the Twin Dual Cam 3.4. It had a 5 speed, what a difference that made over all the others that have the auto. The 5 speed was a one year offer for that gen, wasn't it? 1991? Stupid American car buyers going for an auto transmission IMO.

Read to quick,, thought it said z34..lol

I don't recall how many years pontiac optioned a 5-spd back then but in z34 you only got the Muncie Getrag 284

(not to be confused with the 282) 5-spd,91-93.

In 94 they started switching over to the stupid MAF system and pretty much sealed the LQ1's fate.

as it was from 94 on the LQ1 was forever lost behind an auto.

They took a 7000 rpm screamer and bolted it to a trany with internals that don't like it over 5500..

The LQ1 is a total waste behind an auto, GM completely distroyed the LQ1 Option.

But @ the time everyone wanted automatics and 5-spd did'nt sell as well.

In the end laziness killed the LQ1, whether it was behind the wrong trany, or people just not taking care of them.

The Fiero guys and the 660 boards are slowly waking the after market for the little LQ1,, couple companies are starting to cut cams for them so we'll see..

    Yeah that'd be a nice engine for a Fiero, esp w/a 5-speed.

Just about every domestic "v" style FI engine has been tried V6 and V8.

Even the old Toyoder MR2 guys are getting in the game.

Yeah it works well in a much lighter car. On the gen-1 w-body they even limited the free rev to 3000 rpm.

GM says it was to protect the engine, however anyone familier with the POS 4T60e (99% of GM FWD automatics in general) knows better.

All done in an attempt to save the junk automatics they even under tuned the LQ1 for them..

People such as myself are/were hitting 250 crank with a cam reset, a good SD tune, and bolt ons,

running manifolds as there are no headers available that are'nt custom.

Oops! l67 territory and no Eaton? Whoa can't have that!

The 3800 was later chosen for it's reliablity in the hands of the average Joe.

So closing the chapter on LQ1 engines.. "stupid move" imo

Many tech shops did'nt/don't even have tools for working on the LQ1,,

even when the engine was in full production many shops here would'nt even touch it.

    "Too complex!"
