What gain?
I asked this question in the automatic transmission section with no luck. I just recently purchased a '93 Formula for next to nothing. It's my first A4 car, and it's basically stock except for a cold air intake, 1LE elbow, 160 stat, cat-back and single 3" cut-out before the muffler. The car makes good power from a roll, but last night at the track I found it to be pretty sluggish off the line with the exhaust open (cap off). It didn't take me long to figure out that 1600-rpm launches with the stock converter just ain't gonna get it done. With the exhaust open it doesn't begin making any real power till around 3000-3200rpm.
My next step is to order a Yank 3200-stall which will put me right around where my powerband begins. My question is what should I expect for a gain, considering good traction and the stock 3.23 gears on street tires?

With a proper-matching stall, most people report a drop in a couple tenths off their ET's.

Does it really matter how much, as long as there is an improvement? As long as you get a gain with the stall that you need/have, what would be the problem? Not everyone is going to see the same improvements.

By adding the stall you will see some improvement not sure how much. It all depends on your other components. But like Black said at least it is an improvement.

Another cool feature of the stall is you can snarl at cars when your cruising in the city without gaining speed. It's fun to do at imports and Mustangs.

Stall speed ratings are only approximate. Put that 3200 behind 1000 lb ft and it will probably stall at 4000.

are u sure that u have 3.23 gears? i thought only t/a's got 3.23 in 93. i have a 93 formula that is stock with 2.73 gears. this would explain why your car is slow out of the hole....they got 2.73 gears for highway cruising. i know what u mean by good power from a roll...but out of the hole it isnt the best. put the car up and take the gear housing cover off....count the teeth on the gears....small one should be 15....the bigger one 41. take 41/15=2.7333rep......this is the only 100% way to know your gear ratio. i could be wrong, but just check to make sure. u should go with 3.42 instead....ull notice a difference in acceleration and itll still be all right on fuel economy.

Or, instead of counting teeth, you could look at your RPO codes.

Good gain! I installed the stall about 2 months ago and wen't from a best of 14.02 to 13.71. I've since added Motive 3.90 gears, Level 10 shift kit, JET Billet 2-1 servo, Strange hardened axles, BFG 255/50 Drag radials, Eibach Drag launch springs & Subframes. The car is snappy as heck off the line. Have yet to hit the track again, but i'll post numbers as soon as I do.
