You are going to have to look closer. Could be a lifter, rocker, or exhaust leak. The later of the 3 would be my guess.

Possible cracked rocker. You need to pull the valve covers and go over everything.

Look for an exhaust leak first. What mods are done to your car?

Yeah, an exhaust leak can sound like a tapping. That's how mine sounded when I couldn't seal the EGR all the way on my LT's. Drove me nuts too. But once I verified that it was just a leak, it didn't bother me anymore.

i took a look at it yesterday and it does look like a header gasket and i took the valve covers off a saw that it wasnt a rocker, spring, of rod but i did find a small piece of rubbery plastic that looks kinda like a messed up S from the side. is there anything in the intake manifold that looks like that. the tapping sounds like it is coming from the center back of the motor. im woundering if maybe i blew a intake manifold gasket?

I don't think its anything to worry about. Unless it starts to puff some smoke on cold start-up I dont think its from the valve seal.
