I agree with Mark. I've seen a number of complete LS1s/trans deals for a few bucks more than similar LT1 packages. Not sure of how mechanically inclined you are but you have to also consider the labor costs you'll run into by building from scratch vs buying low milage used or crate. Also, 450 to the wheels is decent power but means nothing if you can't hook. Have you thought about the suspension?

hook means getting traction off the line when you launch from a dead stop......all the power in the world won't matter if you can't keep traction to use it.
hey man and if it makes you feel any better we all had to start learning at one time......and trust me we never stop learning.
I went to Wyotec years ago and loved it!

Get a nice LE1 kit for the LT1 with some new bottom end and you will be fine.

consider a 3 3/4 or a 3 7/8 stroker crank with flat top pistons ,to run on pump gas.you can get this at competition products.com. use aluminum heads,215-225cc runners.get a head with 70cc or bigger chamber .cam should have 240- 245 intake duration, exhaust duration should be around 245-255.these are ball park numbers for a hydraulic cam ,add 8 more degrees timing for a solid cam.and port match a edelbrock rpm air gap intake.top it off with 750 dp and heat resistant carb spacer.

i would look into the COMP "503" cam. it should be a 224/230 @.050, and can be run on stock heads to make a 350ish WHP. some afr heads would definetly help alot in the power department.
that cam should make some real decent torque numbers, and is not too radical for the street.

custom cam all the way from comp cams. also those numbers will need ported heads/ aftermarket heads. for those numbers you will want a 383 bottom end with flat top or just valve relief pistons. I have a project in the works with ported patriots right now. Not gonna say any specifics, but it would meet your goals. it shouldn't take too much after you have a forged 383. If you go forged, you can always toss a 150 or bigger shot of nitrous on there if you get any more power hungry. ( I got power hungry on stock displacement with some nitrous, that's why i am doing my build)
