Black- 1999 WS6 T/A
WS6 Whine
Hello All,
I recently bought a beautiful black 1999 WS6 with 33,OO0 miles on it. I carefully drove it 2000 miles from Vermont to Texas and have since put 900 "spirited" miles on it. ( smoked the tires a couple of dozen times). My car has developed a whine whenever I criuse without applying the throtle. I wan't to know if this is realated to the rear end fliud and what is the best way to add/change this fliud yourself?
Thanks in advance!

I too have a whine. Mine starts when the car is between 50mph and 60mph. Slight whine at those speeds and it will increase if I give it a little gas. Once I'm past 60, or below 50 it doesn't do it.

In my experience, changing the fluid never helped rear diff whining.

If someone replaced the fluid however, and didn't put in the GM additive, that could cause the problem. However, if they used Royal Purple, as I did, you don't need the GM additive as RP includes it in their diff fluid.
For the price of changing it, you may want to try it anyway for peace of mind. You can do a visual inspection if you pull the diff cover off as well.
If it has the stock diff cover, you have to remove it to drain the fluid. I installed a SLP/AAM diff cover so I can change the fluid easily the next time as it has a drain plug. To refill it, there is a bolt on the upper front side of the diff.

Mine doesn't sound like it's coming from the rear. Noticed it ever since i bought the car. Took it back in and they said they couldn't find anything. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same thing.
