    Warning to Firebird/Trans Am owners

A while back I was detailing my car and I lifted that black plastic deal that snaps onto the rocker panel and found a rust bubble the size of a 50 cent piece which completely surprised and horrified me. The thing that I don't get I have owned the car for 8-9 years and bought it with low miles, I have stored it the last eight winters I have owned it and the car has RARELY ever seen rain. WTF? Im thinking the only thing that could have caused this is the water that gets through the side scoops over the years after I wash it. I ended up bringing it to a body shop where they sanded it down and found a small micro whole under the rust which they bonded metal to metal to fill then painted and blended it. The repair costed me about $350 and was well worth it. I am sooo happy I checked under there and stopped that rust in its tracks, I couldn't imagine if I would not have found that and it got even worse over the years. Just a word of advice to t/a owners, lift that up and check you might be surprised what you find...

Just curious is there any formula to get rid of rust before painting? I have some rust by my brake booster line.

    Treating rust

There is a spray that you can buy at any auto supply store. It will neutralize the rust and turn to a black surface. I have used it to touch up rust spots around the battery tray.

I'll have to look again. Haven't been in my car in awhile My 96 did. I honestly don't recall the 02 having plastic on the door rail though. I'm probably wrong. I just looked and neither of my Impala's do.

I had to think about it too..

My 95 still said "fisher motor carriage" on the rocker plates like both my 3rd gens did, where as my 01 just had a bunch of squares molded into it.

I was about to say... They're identical. Regardless, I always snap 'em out and dry under after a wash, and if I don't drive the car the same day, leave them out a few days to dry. Never hurts to be careful.

I have used por-15 in the past and works real good. You can buy it online or some auto parts stores carry it.

Just checked mine and thankfully no rust but I will be cleaning up that area and throwing a coat of sealer on it. Thanks for the heads up

Haven't checked mine yet. I wonder if this rust happens from the inside or the outside of the panel. If it's from the inside, nothing you seal up on the outside will help.

If it's from inside Eastwood has a inside fram rail sealer that could work out good
