The very worst day of my life :(

I was driving my 1999 T/A home from work late last night when i must have dozed off. Next thing I knew I was stopped looking at trees. Tried starting the car, nothing but a clunk from the starter, tried getting out my drivers door.. no go.. had to climb over to the passanger side.. just to get out.. I was less than 16/th of a mile from my house.. I've owned this car since 2002 with barely 12k on the odo, took insane care of it and swore I would never sell it. Managed to break my nose, sprain my anxle and get 15 stitches above my eye but I could care less about that... my poor baby looks worse. From the rear she looks mint still. A walk around the fron is another story.. the bumper cover is pushed back several feet fron the point in the middle, I can see my be cool rad is folded across the front of my LS1 like tinfoil...my only hope is that the engine sat back far enough that it may still be salvageable after I pull enough scrapnal out of the way to get a decent look I don't have very high hopes though.. I'm really hopeful that my t-56 will be undamaged.. Thus far I simply know that it shifted about 2 inches towards the back since the shifter now hits the console when trying to place it in any even numbered gear. Sorry for the rant, feel like a close friend or relative is gone.. I'll post some carnage pics when I get to work on monday..

That sucks...that really sucks BUT the good news is that you walked away from it. Better to have a messed up car than your family having to buy a casket.

There is just nothing that can be said in a situation like this that is very consoling. Yes, you came out of it unhurt for the most part, and that is what is most important. But, then there is that attachment we all feel with our favorite cars and when you've taken such good care of a car you love, there is nothing that can be said, other than, I'm really sorry...

Pat & Kr are correct. Having just walked away from an accident myself, better to be alive than dead or seriously hurt.

Glad your ok, but it could have been much worse. You can get another car. and you only got banged up. But had you fell asleep, crossed the center line and killed a family, now that would be the worse day of your life. From my perspective.

I know the feeling. My '02 Z28 was my first new car and I babied it. Then ended up totaling it out. I bought a '00 SS but it's not the same.

Looks like I'm going to be able to salvage the drivetrain... now to find a good write-up on swapping an ls1/t-56 into a C4 vette..

Sorry to hear about the car.
Motor could be swapped but the Trans used in the Vette are different from the F-body as they use a Torq tube and the Trans is in the back, just have to sell yours and pick up one of the many vette Trans out there for sale.

you are thinking of a c5 vette, c4's dont use torque tubes, the transmissions bolt to the rear of the engines.. Looks as if the swap has been done a number of times... looks like some fabbing will be involved and c5 accessories will be needed

Oh ok my buddy has a c5 and that is what I was referring to as I have been under it a few times and it's all together different. Sounds like a neat build.

Sorry to hear you stuffed it! Did the engine and trans end up ok?

Had a buddy swerve to miss a deer, went into the trees at 50..peeled his mustang open, but just a few scrapes and scratches on him

So far It still sits there as is, Planning to salvage all undamaged parts from it prior to scrapping the rest.. so far all I have done was cut out a section of the lower radiator support that was pressed up against the crank pulley preventing it from rotating, I also cut the hood off to see what I was up against.. the tree impacted just left off the hood latch so the drivers side was pushed back all the way to the block, my alternator, ps pump, and related brackets didnt survive.. after freeing the crank pulley and turning it by hand I taped off what was left of the alternator wires, I put a fully charged battery back in, stuck the maf, iat, and lid onto the TB, crossed my fingers, climbed in the pass side and into the drivers seat, stuck the key in and it started right up! I let it run for 20 secs or so and shut it off since it has no cooling system etc. Plan to start removing the drivetrain soon, stuck working in the parking lot at my job, too twisted up to roll it in
