    Steering column, ignition problems

I dont know if this is common or what but recently a piece broke off in the left side of my steering column and now you can pull my steering wheel down to the left and you cant start or turn the car off unless you do that. I have a video ill put up and a picture of the broken piece that fell out. Im guessing it must hold the steering wheel in a certain place and over time it broke. How the hell do i fix this? lol some liquid nails?

Sorry about the quality my decent camera borke now i have to use my shitty one.

It's hard to tell from the pic seeing as that isn't the whole part. Can't tell what it is. I would pull the steering wheel and see where it came from. I happen to have an entire column in my garage, so get a better shot of the whole piece, and send me a PM. I can match it up.

Here's a nice cutaway of how the ignition cylinder actuates the ignition swith through a sector and rack gear and a rod.

yep thats it in the 2nd pic on the right in the middle.. the small black piece. Id pull the steering wheel but i dont have a steering wheel puller. I think i have a pretty good idea of where it came from. The plastic piece that sits on the rod that you use to adjust your steering wheel up in down popped off and thats where the little black piece fell out of one day. I think it came from in there, how the hell do i get the black plastic covers off that cover the entire steering and lockout assembly??

You're going to have to get a steering wheel puller and remove the steering wheel.

I bouht a cheapo puller from autozone to pull mine. It's not that bad of a job. Keep that cut away that Cutlass posted! reassembly can get a bit tricky without a guide or really good memory.

Here's a good parts list. I'm going with number 43, "shoe release".

I have had this problem for so long now. There is a REPAIR kit? That's awesome. My main problem is that the stupid steel dowels that the column pivots on fall out all the time too. And y are there so many goddamn pieces? It;s fuvhing stupid.

To be specific, the sector keeps slipping off the actuater rack. And i think that is because the actuater rack isn't pinned to my column anymore.

Seems like you alread figured it out, but the piece isn't broken. I just found the piece in my garage. The problem is, I found it laying next to the column so I have no f'n clue where it came from!

Check out the exploded views that I posted. It shows it going on the ignition side behind the "knuckle". Not sure of you can get it in whithout pulling the wheel.

The movement in your column suggests that the pins have fallen out, or something else is either broken or has loosened. I have a vid link that was posted by another member to help me repair the column in our Monte Carlo -- I'll go find it and copy it into this thread. Fortunately (or unfortunately), GM columns have not changed much through the years. The vid should help you.

Watch this: http://www.stolenandrecovered.com/video/2.php There are multiple vids in the series -- link beneath the screen takes you to the next one. You should be able to go to the start also.

True. they are a mystery and common knowledge at the same time. But there is lots of help out there and if you have to tools and time, you can fix them.
