    Squeak from rear suspension

Does anyone know how to resolve the rear suspension squeak from a 2002 Trans Am with 18.5k miles? It’s noisy stopping accelerating and getting in and out of the car. Any suggestions besides turning up the stereo will be appreciated.

    squeak

Not sure if this helps but the rear seat leaver of my ta squeaks sometimes. Its the one that lets the back seat down. It seems the drivers side release on most of them have a little play and can squeak sounds like its coming from the rear suspension. Give it a try with some lube or just pull it down. Hope that helps.

^^^Yes, I had that problem with my '98 TA. The fix was some lube.

OP, is that where it's coming from? (Put the seat down to test). Otherwise, my '98 also had very noisey rear sway bar bushings, sounds like what you are describing. Is it worse with the cold weather? If so, it's probably your rear sway bar to frame bushings making the noise, I confirmed it on my old TA, but never fixed it. New bushings will probably help. You could try some spray lube (like WD-40) for a temp fix if it's the bushings.

My trans am had the same noise at 20k miles. Open the trunk and push down on the rear. If it has the same squeak you describe, 99% sure it's the swaybar bushings. I changed them out with some energy suspension poly bushing and no more sqeaking... Oh! do not use wd-40, it made the sqeaking even louder!

Check that your rear coils are seated properly. If the car was ever jacked up to raise one rear wheel, or put on a lift and the axle was @ full swing (axle hanging as far as it can go) sometimes a coil can shift on its cradle and rub/squeak against the cradle side or center. Raise the vehicle support with stands or put it on a lift and let the axle hang, then reach in and shake the coils see if they move then lower it down and check for the squeak again. Just a thought..

Also check your exhaust and heat sheildings. Shake your exhaust from the rear see if it squeaks. Could be a rock or road debris hit one of the heat shields and bent it, letting your exhaust rub it slightly..

Thank you for your help. I believe that is the problem. How difficult is it to replace those bushings?

It's pretty easy. Getting the old one off was the toughest just bc the rubber around the bolt was so old and harden. First break lose the bolt then spary some wd-40 and wait to take it apart.

OMG you will die if you try to do it yourself. Take it to a mechanic and let them make some $$$ off you. Just sayin', because I make my living fixing people's cars. I really do.

But, if you want to try, it really isn't a hard thing to do, just follow 1TA LS1s advice.

physco puppie make sure you check the exhaust hangers where they go in the rubber mounts,a little lube will shut that squeak up as well.
