    Exclamation SIAB Deployed 1998 Firebird

Hoping somebody can answer these questions.
My 1998 firebird backended another car. Exterior damage is not too bad, some parts need repair, replacement. Unfortunately, both interior airbags deployed and the car will not start. I've read through most of the threads here but I am still trying to determine couple things:
    1. Are the deployed airbags not allowing the car to start?
    2. If I remove the bags and DO NOT replace them can the car start?
    3. Without airbags, how do I reset the codes (assuming this is causing the non-start)?
    4. Any suggestions on where to buy really inexpensive airbags, sensors, etc.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

When the key is in the ignition and you turn over one click does it power to the cars systems like...

    radio, instrument gauges, etc

    or nothing at all?

Have you checked the battery? Where it sits is not the strongest mount, it can with collisions come loose and when they contact the metal body short out.

I would also suspect a battery (or wiring) issue after a front end collision. To my knowledge, you can remove airbags from the vehicle and it will still run and drive, but you will have a light on in the dash.

BTW: If you need a front bumper support (the metal crosspiece and foam) I have the one we removed from our car to install the Burkhart Chassis lightweight piece).

I confirmed today the ignition key sequence, one click did activate the dashboard lights, chime etc. The interior compartment electronics are in working condition.

So the IIRC sensor under the console...? What should or can I check on this sensor? Is there a reset?

Some history, we did disconnect & re-connect the battery the day of the incident. No change in condition.

    Thank you SMWS6TA

I would also check all the fuses. I have had 2 cars that were involved in front end collisions where the air bags deployed, and both started and drove fine. (minus the damage to the cars of course) These were 2000 and 2001 chevy cavaliers though. I really don't think the air bags would affect the engine and not make it start. I did on both cars that were wrecked, however, had blown fuses for the pcm, and the cars wouldnt start with out the pcm. Start with the fuses would be my suggestion.

The sensor is under the center console. You will need to remove the console to get to it. I have not seen a reset button on it. Doesn't mean there isn't one, however.

It can't hurt to lift the car up and see if the starter is still attached. I had mine busted off completely when my truck was t-boned.

I'll look in my f body manuals to see if anything is on the airbags and get back to you.
