should i?
I am thinking about buying an LS6 crate motor for 3400 to put in my T/A and juat swap out my parts from my motor. What do you all think instead of trying to do a head and cam swap on a motor with 87000 miles on it?

There are only a handful of ls-6 crate motors left so if you want one grab it now. If the cylinders have good compression I don't see why you wouldn't head/cam what you have. Plenty of people have with more miles.

I think the labor & guess work is why i want to do it. Not to mention 00,000 miles on it. My goals are just a bad ass street car. Maybe a more agressive cam to top it off?

I think, the crate motor with 000,000 miles on it is the way to go. But you will have more than $3400 in it (buying special tools, etc).

you would come out good either way IMO, i just did a heads and cam swap on my car a few months ago and it has 130,000 on it and it made 450rwhp and is doing great,it still had the cross hatching in the cylinders,if your engine has been taken care of then i would consider your mileage low,but it would be nice to start off with a fresh ls6 too!

people with twice more miles than that cam their engines... ls1's are easily good for 200k when cared for. With that said even if you bought the ls6 would you still cam it? Is so it would cost the same amount of money as you would spend to cam your ls1, imo do a comp test and ensure the engine is healthy then cam it and get a decent set of heads for it. in the end you'll make more power than the ls6 and still have a reliable car.

Ignition Orange/Black- 2008 G8 GT, 98 Z28 383
I built mine at 120K miles. No issues and it's got 136K now. Put down 424/389 in 90 degree FL weather. Id save the $ for a rear end or something else.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. This is a tuff one for me. I found an add on craigs list for some LSX parts. Along with many other things.... the two that caught my eye were: LS6 heads ported+milled fresh $650 also he has two different cams stating: Comp 242/248 110lsa Cam $150 or Comp 240/248 114lsa cam $150 i am going to look at what he has on Monday. Do you think this combo would be good for me? If not, what has worked out well for some of you & how much do you think for the install? Also, if I bought the LS6.... I would have an LS1 sitting in my garage to play around with. I really want to learn how to tear one down & put it back together!!
