    Serpentine Belt

Got a problem guys. Got a brand new Gates belt from RockAuto the other day. It just a fraction too long. It's very close to be tight enough. If I pull it fairly hard I can pull it around all the pulleys. Any ideas? 2002 WS6 M6

Did you get the correct length belt? Is the tensioner pulley moving all the way down before you put the belt on? The belt should not be that tight. It should go on relatively easy with the tensioner pulley moved down.

If all that is in order, get a longer belt.

Hey Jon. It's been a while. Well no, the belt is just a hair too long. All the pulleys are stock.

I guess I misread. Sounds like it's too long so it would be not tight as it should be once it's installed?

I interpret your last sentence in the opening remarks that the belt needs to be stretched to fit, which makes it too short.

If it's too long and isn't tight enough, there's not much to do really outside of getting a shorter belt. You definitely don't want the belt to fit too loose or it will slip on you.

I don't recall there being any adjustments on the pulley/s. I would just return it and get a new belt.

Did you check the belt number against oem to ensure it's the same length?

Well yeah the tensioner pulley is already sprung out as far as it will go. I do know that RockAuto parts are supposed to be genuine stock parts. Unfortunately I don't have a GM parts list. I used to have one a few years ago but I lost it in 1 of 3 floods my house has been through.

    On-line Gates catalog shows P/N K060790 (p. 693 at this link: http://www.gates.com/~/media/files/g...2016.pdf?la=en )

Hey Jeff. Haven't talked to you in a while either. Merry Christmas by the way. Ok, I've purchased 2 belts so far. The first one was a Roadmax 6K790AP. That one way too long. The second was the Gates K060790. And that's the one that's just a hair too long. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out one of these days.

Are you positive that you have the belt routing correct? On some cars there is more than one way to wind it around all the pulleys. Belated Merry Christmas!

Good morning Jeff. Yes sir it's definitely routed correctly. I just noticed in my previous response to you that I didn't thank you. That's not like me. I apologize Jeff. Thank you very much for your input.

I've even been looking at rockauto to see if they have an idler or tensioner pulley whose dimensions are just a fraction larger than what I have now.

Possible that the tensioner pulley or something was changed out during the car's life and that it is a touch smaller in diameter.

Have you tried contacting the belt manufacturer to ask them about it?
