Selling my 1994 Trans Am GT

So i recently found out that I have a lot of problems with my TA. It is essentially a project car. The guy I bought it from said it was a great running car and "HAD NO PROBLEMS". He said he had no time to drive it and get it registered so that's why he was selling it. He only sold it because it failed emissions very badly. The auto shop said it will be about $3,000.00 to get it to pass. And then after that we still need to get the front end aligned and the air recharged and the transmission mounts replaced. No wonder I only payed $2,800.00. If anyone has any ideas for a new car for me please give me ideas. I would prefer a car with a lot of power, rear wheel drive, and manual transmission. Thanks everyone.

    Why not just fix it?
Try and do some of the work yourself and save $$.
Any 15+ year old car you buy is going to have issues, esp for $2800.
If the body is in good shape I say put a little bit of money into it then you KNOW you have a good car.

I agree with saving the car idea. T/A GT's are rare and if it were me, I would be saving that car.

trans mount- $30 fix if you do it yourself...takes like 20 mins...
emissions- what is the problem that is severe enough to cost $3000?

Has all the emissions stuff been stripped from the car? If not, you should be able to fix it for far less than $3k. A good tune up can also do wonders.

If all of the emissions have been removed it still wouldn't cost 3k to fix. You can put perforamce parts on it and have it pass emissions for less than 3k. I would get a different quote some where else if you can't fix it yourself. But I would keep it.

i bet its probably a cat problem or smog pump or something that can easily be replaced...but yea i would have asked them what the problem was and look up the parts myself ....

what state are you from and what are the emissions laws?
I know in ILL if the car is 95 and older and passed once it would be exempt now. Or if newer all you need to do is show proof of spending $500 in parts would get you a pass for 2 years or so.

plus if its an lt1, can't you just turn the distributor back or lean it out for the test. Is it a dyno test on rollers or actual car inspection u would fail? they don't inspect under the hood out here.

To OP, DON'T trust that shop. I was told today there are shops that will tell you ANYTHING to get you to part with your car so they can fix it cheap and sell for more and make a profit...which is ILLEGAL in some states. Fix the car already!!!

That's excatly what I was thinking. I would go somewhere else if you can't fix it yourself.

    fixing it yourself

    1. Can you wrench it and do you have the place/time? I'd say it's worth $3K to learn it. Get a mentor and pay them somehow for it (food, alcohol). Buy the tools and learn. If you borrow tools apply the man code to it -- if it's scratched or slightly broken buy them a new one and ask offer to keep the scratched one -- also exchange a 6-24 pack depending on the circumstance. Then you'll be able to borrow again, if needed. Find a LIFT. that helps a lot. Lifts are sometimes hard to find -- sign your life/liability away and be safe. listen to your mentor.

    2. if you are afraid to change your air filter -- your fear is well founded. don't do it, sell the car, and get a new car under warranty.

    Just being blunt....

BTW -- congrats on that 94. good eye. good catch. I like that year's styling...

Transfer the title and tags to Oklahoma.

We don't have no stinkin' emissions testing.
