My Buds T/A is fast for no reason......

since my cars in the shop i drove my friends '00 T/A back and his car drives like nothing ive ever been in. when u put a normal T/A like mine in 2nd and punch it it will go but will go through the rpm range. when i put his in second and punch it, the engine revs straight up to 5500rpm in second gear and holds that rpm as the car accelerates through second. any idea what mod would make the car drive like this. im not even sure how to explain it but because of how it revs up and holds the high rpm through the gear his car kicks the sh@# outta mine. any ideas?????

fyi this is T/AKing postin on my buds name

Sounds like a stall to me. Watch videos of people w/ them, it will hold it up in the 3-4k RPM range.

guys im almost 99% sure its not a stall. stall converters are mainly for off the line. im talking about punchin it from a second gear 2500rpm roll. hes already goin 35 mph and punchin it the engine jumps up to 5500 and screams through 2nd gear into third. his car also under normal driving holds a higer rpm (around 3k) longer before shifting to the next gear. i only wish we knew what the freak hes got in that thing lol. keep the ideas comin.....

It sounds like he has either a nitrous system with a WOT switch or it is possible that he has done a tranny shift kit and computer software to set custom shift points...

Actually that is not true. Stalls also help get rid of that dead spot.

    Most likely stall.

Thats why we recommend a converter for the first mod for an A4.

My money is on a stall. What you describe is exactly what a stall does. It gets the car into the sweet spot and keeps it there. Did you notice on the shifts the rpm's still stayed up there? That's called shift extension. Check out Fuddle's site ( sponsor). John has a ton of good info there on stalls.

you say the fist mod for an A4 would be a stall, but if a guy like me who is eventually going to put a cam in and wants a convertor, then i should wait right?

I didn't. I put a 3500 in with stock cam. Just make sure you pick a stall that will match up with the cam you'll eventually get.

I know very little about stall converters except what I have learned from some friends. Any one mind giving me a better idea about them ? I sold a vette to a friend of mine with a very light stall in it. C4 2100 stall. He was asking what it does for the car and I tried to explain but I know there is alot more to it. I'd like to get him some better info and to have it for my own info if I ever go back to auto.

heres to the best of what i know....
reason why it helps launch off the line is because when you hold the brake down and get ready to launch, a higher stall will allow you to press the gas (and brake at same time) and the car wont go anywhere until it hits the higher rpm that the new stall is at. then it slams into gear and goes. lets say you have a 4000rpm stall. so when youre sitting on the line ready to go, you can hold the brake, and gas it and the tranny wont go in gear until you hit 4k. apparently it also gets rid of the "dead spot" when you gun it from a low rpm in gear like i described in teh first post.
theres also the "shift extension" orion was talkin bout a few posts up

OK now I had a 4000 stall in the GN I used to have and it never slammed into gear when letting it go. Doesn't the stall help load up the trans untill it reaches converter lock ? which in this case would be at or around 4000 ?

All of you with an auto have a stall. It just so happens that yours, "stalls" at a lower RPM. A "stall" is nothing but a torque converter built to slip more than a stock TC. For instance, while holding the car in place with the brake, a stock TC will allow you to raise the RPMs to around 1800 before the tires start to spin. Now, say you have a 3600 stall converter, your rpms will be around 3600 before the tires start to spin. Thus, putting the engine up higher into its power curve.

This is why you have to have one when installing a larger cam, since the larger cam will have a power curve starting at a higher RPM than stock.

my car does the same thing but i have a stock stall out of a 92z in my 97ta i thought it was a little weird but i think my car did it with a stall i think its in the programing of the shift pionts vs line press vs rpm ect... i incresed line press and rased the shift pionts in some gears. but my friends ta is still faster then mine almost stock and i have heads and cam the real anwser is called a wensday car while any other day the assembles were more or less pissed to be at work
