Mirror lights

Got into my car today and the two rear view mirror lights popped on by themselves. I had to manually turn them off. Whats the deal with that?

They turned on while driving? Or they turned on, and as usual, when you entered the car but didn't turn off when you started it?

Opened the door, sat in seat, closed door, started car and drove off. Rear view mirror lights were on, popped out, and I had to press them back up to turn them off.

They weren't already on before you got in? I'm pretty sure the down position (the state you originally saw it in) means on

If they are in the down position and the car is off the lights are on, right. They were not on when I got into the car.

If they had been left on I think they will time out when the car is not running. Then when the key is turned back on they will come on. Just like the radio does.
