    Magnaflow issue

So there is this pinging noise in the right cat. It only acts up at 2,000 rpms. Its starting to annoy me so I have decided to gut the cats, seeing as how that may be the only way to get rid of it. My question is will that effect the performance of the car to the point that I will need a tune?

No, sounds like the cat internals became loose if it is making a rattle noise.

If your cat is bad take it to the dealer first. GM has extended the warranty on cats for the F bodies. You may be able to get it replaced for free.

Do you have Magnaflow cats on the car? Or are you going to upgrade from stock to Magnaflow cats? Also, do you have heat shields on the cats?

Check to see if the shields are rattling. If the shields are OK, then either gut the cats or replace. You should have a warranty on those cats. I can't remember what the warranty is on Magnaflows at the moment.

No prob. You can try gutting the cats, but you might get a check engine code. But I could be wrong.

Just keep in mind if you gut the cats any shop can refuse to work on it cause apparently removing them is illegal. I had the shop I normally go to tell me that after I dumped my cats. It's bull crap but they can do it. Hopefully it's just your heat shield. I had a dump truck sling one of his mud flaps at me and it went under my car and knocked my heat shield loose. Easy fix if that's all it is.

Oh yeah. I know that. When the cat on my last car went and I bought a Magnaflow stainless cat, there was a card in the box that the shop had to fill out as a reason for replacement. It's against federal law to tamper with functioning cats.

So go to the dealer first, get the cats replaced under warranty then swap to the Thunderbolts and if you have a problem later you'll still have a good set of stock cats to switch back to later.
