m5 is a five speed, which they havent used in the v8 f bod since 92... m6 is the 6 spd. which you have if your car is a manual

The M5 is in the V6 fbody, but not the V8. I had a sales guy trying to tell me a V6 Camaro had a 6-speed! What an idiot. He tried proving it to my by shifting into all the gears, but he just couldn't locate reverse! Although it was on a import new/used car lot, so that may have something to do with it.
The M6 is a 4speed with 2 over drive ratios.

I like BMW's, but they are a bit overpriced. Although if I could afford it I'd like a M5 for a family car!

Then you must have a very much newer car or put in a different trans if you have a A5.
