Lt1=ls1
I found a really nice 96 Trans Am, but I really want an LS1 for more power. Just curious since the LT1 is quite a bit cheaper...what mods are needed to make the LT1 as powerful?

bolt ons all the way up to a cam probably.
btw, im buyin an lt1 camaro that puts out about 480hp for $7k (all professionally done)
so lt1s can definitely keep up with the right mods lol

So it's really that big of a difference. The LT1 trans am I'm looking at is 285hp, the LS1 is around 305 hp right? So I wouldn't think full bolt on PLUS a cam would be necessary?

ok i wasnt really thinkin straight...
full exhaust, CAI, air lid, bigger throttle body, maybe ls6 intake or fast 90 intake (which would be a little more expensive tho... maybe unnecessary too. im not 100% sure)
and a GOOD tune, i bet u could make up 40hp, more or less.
(275 to 315)
if its auto, get a good stall. if its manual, learn how to drive it good lol.
get gears too... 3.73's for an auto and 4.10s for a manual. or u could go a little lower if ur worried about mpg.
all that and u could take an ls1

using ricer math, i guess this is how it could add up:
(very approximate... not exact numbers, i may be a little off)
air lid: 5hp?
cai: 10hp? ive seen records of them makin about 30hp on certain cars, but i doubt that
full exhaust: 20hp
tune: depends, u could make up to 30hp with a good one
with an auto, a good stall can take 1/2 a second off of your quarter mile time, which is alot.
(get a shift kit too for auto)
gears with either will take off a few tenths of ur quarter mile ET also.

Out of the box a LT1 is about 50-60bhp down from a LS1 since the LS1 is underrated at 305bhp but actually puts out around 345bhp. Basic bolt-ons should get a healthy LT1 up in the 345bhp range with a stock LS1....but that doesn't mean it'll have the power under the curve to hang with a LS1 but it should.
So for mods you'll want sub frame connectors, headers, catback, ported throttle body, CAI of some sort, LT4 manifold wouldn't hurt, gears and a tune. This is more then enough to handle a stock LS1...a LT1 is very stout.
The LT1 is a good motor...it has reverse flow coolant which is very good at minimizing detonation from leaning her out, adding timing, increasing the compression...etc. I've never had to swap a opti-spark out but i've heard from many people that it's a PITA...and the main cause of it is the water pump going out and leaking on the opti.

what about just keeping an eye on the water pump?

If you like it get it. The opti will go out though but that ges with older cars, always replacing things. I'm at over 100,000 miles on my LS1 and I've done plenty of work on it to keep it going.

All you need is a 150 shot on an LT1 and you would be able to beat an LS1 easily

Good luck putting an air lid, LS6 intake or FAST 90 on a LT1. Also, I had my LT1 Camaro for 5 years and never had a problem with the Opti. Everyone says "it will go out". Mine didn't. I'm sure if you have it long enough it might. They're supposed to be good to 100,000 miles, though.

my sons friend has a lt1 bird and it is fast. an lt1 will blow away most of what you see on the street. just stay away from the next gen t/a.

A lot of people go with the LT4 heads and intake and 58mm TB. You can make awesome power with an LT1, but mine was in 2 wrecks and was starting to fall apart, so I thought I'd just get an LS1. And my Hawk is faster stock than my LT1 with headers, CAI, and cat back. I had 3.73's on it for a while, till I broke my rear end, and it would definitely launch harder than the Hawk and most other cars, but by the end of third I was out of oomph. My LT1 sounded a lot meaner though, more growl. Either way, it's better than a Ford.
