    K&N or Paper?

This might sound like the ultimate noob question but... The other day I was tinkering under the hood and was reminded that the previous owner of my car had put in a paper filter when he installed a whisper lid. Needless to say, the thing was filthy, and I figured I should replace it. I've read that for LS1's a paper fliter is better than a cotton filter (like K&N). Is this true? Or should I just get a K&N at Autozone like everyone else?

K&N here - no problems ever. Don't forget the free ram air mod.

Paper, K&N is a waste, lets a LOT! more dirt in, and isnt worth but 1-2whp AT THE VERY MOST! On an LS1 the paper filter is sufficient up to about 500whp.

you basically cut out some plastic in your airbox. The plastic is right below the filter and totally unneccesary. Helps the engine breathe better.

go to installuniversity.com they have a good write up

the SLP cold air intake sells for $200 buck or so, I installed it myself,
it installs in front of the radiator and sucks air from under the car. no need to have a ram hood, save the 800 bucks and buy the SLP cai and LT Headers with that money.

Paper or K&N - both are fine. Just don't over oil the K&N when cleaning. Been using the same one in my car since '01.

Put a dab of axle grease in the TB and drive for 1 week and then check it...try it again with a paper filter...I bet you stop using the K&N.

I am willing to bet if you got a diamond sharpening stone and layed 1 hair scratch down the wall of each cylinder you could never tell...would you be happy if it came from the machine-shop that way though? I sure wouldn't. Not running a K&N to avoid contaminants is like doing the TB bypass mod to gain hp. Just 1 more little thing you can do to help.

I use ACDelco in my WS6 and you will never find me using ANYTHING but a regular paper filter. The rest is just a gimmick.

FYI I dynoed my 5.0 with and without the filter. 4whp increase w/o filter (on a carbed motor with 12x3" circular enclosure, on and then off).

4whp from paper vs. nothing...K&N wont do shit in the power dept. Period. I do know it doesnt filter worth crap though. Above links show that well enough.

i never noticed an increase in power but my mileage did improve a little im sure there are some good reasons not to use k&n and the scratches? dont think i have ever seen an engine without them unless its new then honemarks or crosshatch my only reason to use one is cause i can clean it oh and uncle billy bob says it makes his tractor run real good

I cant believe this shit is still being debated.

A K&N will not ruin your engine. Not with proper care it wont. The risk does not outweigh the reward.

In any case, with the FRA mod or even an FTRA installed, youd have to change out papers once every month and that just sucks.

I have a Holley PowerShot by the way.

Risk, you mean 10-13X the dirt getting into your motor?
    Rewards? Like the 1-2 hp?

    Get real.

AMsoil's AE (or EA or something) filter is very similar, filters very well, and flows nicely too. I would go with that if I had to run a non-paper filter. You cannot buy the Blackwing filter anymore. It was made by Donaldson IIRC who no-longer produces it.

This is it, right? If it is, do you or anyone know if it is less expensive somewhere else?
