In Part 2 of How the Pontiac Trans Am was born, we take a look at production engineering and some sketches from Gene Winfield.Last month, I explained that Pontiac General Manager John DeLorean ordered Advanced Engineering (where I was assigned as an engineer) to work on a Firebird-based "Z/28 killer," and my colleagues and I got to work turning an early-production 1967 Camaro into the Pontiac Firebird Sprint Turismo (PFST), a hopped-up road racer complete with a 250ci OHC-6 engine, triple downdraft Weber carbs, the first Shaker hood to come out of Detroit, improved suspension, and a whole lot of attitude.
