I recently had my car up to about 135 mph. It's a 2000 trans am and I just wanted to know, Do our cars have governors and if so what does it top out at?
2000 Arctic White trans am, ws6 hood, ws6 air box, slp lid, slp smooth bellows, slp loudmouth exhaust, shift kit, rebuilt trans, LS6 intake, 3.73 gears, Shaner S3 p/p throttle body, and a tune . SFC. C6 ZO6 rims 18" in back 17" in front. Drilled and slotted rotors.

i know a friend of mine had a 00 z28 and it had a fuel shut-off at 110. from what i understand it was because it didnt come with y (or z i forget...fucking letters) rated tires. as far as i know depending on what its geared at you should be good for 160 ish, do you remember what rpms you were at going 135?

I got my 02 ws6 up to 155, I have been told in another thread (check the 'how fast have you gone' thread) that I had another 10 left with a better tune in it.

Supposedly stock is limited by power only to around 166 mph, if you have a long enough straight away after u hit around 155 mph. A little work and tune and you can get on up there.

yeah each tire rating has a different governor rating.. i have had my needle buried...
mines z rated... thought it was 167 but the guy above me said 168 so i guess go with that... you will have to find the window sticker or something to find yours out by whatever your tires were rated from the factorym then find a chart if its not z

The ws6 package included the z-rated tires, all others got the standard rating of all seasons.

As far as I know, we don't have a governor of any sorts on the car. The only thing limiting your top speed is the power output of the motor. It tops out around the top of 5th, 6th is too tall a gear for stock to really push at higher RPMs. And tires no matter what they are rated are not gonna physically limit your top speed, now is it safe to go beyond their speed rating, prolly not, at least not for an extended period of time...LOL. not that I have ever done that...
