General Info to some common questions

Ok everyone, Post up. I know this is a very common question and I'll lay down the basics. But I know I may miss a few.

What is the difference between a T/A and a WS6 and how can I tell if it's a real WS6 or not?

WS6 in general is an appearance and suspension option offered on T/A's and Formula's. SOme common dead giveaways of a true WS6 is the hood and the components that go with it. The airbox is taller than a stock T/A's to tate up with the Ram Air hood. Also the WS6's came with a sportier suspension, ie, decarbon shocks. Badging on the rear is a definate identifier. Besides the badging, the best way to know for sure is the door sticker on the inside of the drivers side door where you'll see the code "WS6"

What's the differences between the years?
In 1998, the T/A was introduced with the LS1 for the first time. These LS1's came with perimeter bolt valve covers instead of centerbolt and the coil packs were not on a bracket but rather individually bolted onto the valvecover. Other noteable differences were larger fuel injecters and the famous OTL exhaust "One on the Left" Where one single exhaust tip exited on the drivers side. The exhaust was a much more free flowing exhaust system than the later years. In 1998 the EGR system was definately present with a tube going directly into the intake manifold. Many either completely delete the EGR or trim the tube going into the manifold to incease the flow of intake.

In 1999, the exhaust because a little more restrictive with the introduction of dual exiting exhaust but smaller piping. EGR was present but they also downgraded the fuel injectors to I believe 26 lbs from 28 lbs. Other than that, the T/A remained relatively unchanged.

In 2000, The EGR was relocated and injectors were stepped back up to 28 lbs from 26. The introduction of an Air tube into the induction lid was also included.

In 2001 and 2002, everything remained relatively the same with the exception of an LS6 manifold instead of the stock LS1 manifold. HP increase by about 10hp. In 01 and 02, some T/A received an LS6 block due to a casting shortage of LS1 blocks. SO if you are curious if you have an LS6 block, below the rear of the drivers side head is a block casting number. If the last 4 digits are 1168, then you've got an LS6 block

That all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to add on to this thread or correct me if I'm wrong. I'm only human not an encyclopedia!

The HP increase from the 98-00 years to the 01-02 years was only 5, from 305 to 310.
The single left outlet exhaust on the 98s was only on WS6s and SS cars, not the regular models.
The 98s had a more radical camshaft, not sure of the specs though.
    01-02s had better exhaust manifolds.
Also with the introduction of the LS6 manifold in 01, EGR was eliminated.

This is all I can think of now..

    Buyer Beware

Beware of dealers or private parties selling non WS6's with ASC style hood. Always check your door sticker or verify the vin with me first. I've had a few ppl tell me that's happened to them. VERIFY PPL!

Not arguing but beg to differ about that horsepower increase. I may also be wrong but wasn't 98-00 315 and 01-02 325. Pretty sure internet and pontiac place agreed.

I found some info I state the comment and the site. The engine in the base Coupe or Convertible is the 3800 (3.8-liter) V6, yielding 200 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque. The 5.7-liter V8 (overhead-valve LS1 with aluminum cylinder block and heads) comes in the Formula and Trans Am in two versions: 310 horsepower and 340 foot-pounds of torque or, with the WS-6 Ram Air package, 325 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. http://www.nctd.com/review-intro.cfm...d&ReviewID=886

    hood

negative, WS6's have the quatroport hood, the regular TA's have only dual nostrils. There are however after market hoods in the WS6 style as well as firehawk and Mecham.

Thanks for posting cam differences, Blackhawk. Any way of finding more details on them, like overlap, IVO, IVC, EVO, EVC, stuff like that???

    package

There were an assload of regular T.A.'s converted to WS6 (I think roughly a third in 02) the last couple of years. Thousands more than the 3rd gens. So yes, there are a lot of WS6's running around. A WS7 is a regular TA that started life as just that, a regular T.A. and was converted by the owner to look like the WS6; ie hood, air box, wheels, and exhaust. They even made a badge for it. Just as good as a WS6 but costing thousands less since the WS6 package was an extra 3k+ on the sticker for what is mostly appearance.

No, a WS7 is a WS7. A fake would be someone sticking a WS6 badge on the back and buying all the accessaries ie wheels, hood ect. Poser. That's why someone came up with the WS7 so people would know that while it looked like the factory WS6 they actually save theirselves a ton of money and got all the same stuff on theirs and did it themselves. They still get respect. Someone once said, immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Regarding the WS6, and careful not offend the WS7 owners. All the badging and bolt-on's in the world, if for free, couldn't replace the kick's I get driving my ordinary T/A. "It's not what you got,...It's how you use it!" I've got nothing technical to contribute, but have enjoyed this read....Thanks.

I am curious to know if there are any members in this forum who've seen a GMMC Blackbird ? ZL-1 427 cu in 2002 T/A. I know they made 69 ZL-1 427 cu in camaros in 2002...but how many T/A's did they make? The engine is the C5-R 427 aluminum racing engine used in Rolex Le-Mans series...etc

Yes Paul and your ASC # is 1389 and your conversion date was Sept 8, 2000 for your A4 w/t-tops. That is all the info I have. Merry Christmas.
