gas question
I have a legitimate reason for asking this silly question but I want to get a few replies then I'll tell you my story behind it. What octane gas do you use? (minor modded ls1)

Well the thing is I was knocking and pinging all around town so I called the dealership, mistake, and they asked what octane I use and I told them 93 and they quickly said I was running too high of an octane then hung up. I was/am confused my wife put 87 in it a while back and man that car complained all week. I thought about asking the dude on the phone if he wanted me to feed it hay and dangle an apple in front of it while kicking the side screamin Giddyup!

They said 93 was to high?? LOL!!! If your car was stock you might be able to get away with 87 but why?? How much are you really saving? Do the math. about .20 cents a gallon. An average person drives about 12-15k miles a year. The average F-bod probably gets about 20mpg roughly. At 15k miles your gana fill her up about 47 times. Multiply that by $3 and your saving about $140 a year. Is that really worth running on 87 octane?? Seems kinda stupid to me.

Thats stupid. Use 93 and avoid all the problems. Is it really worth saving $140a year and risk the change of running into major problems down the road. If your looking for a fuel efficiant car, well ur shit outta luck cause the F-body isnt known for conserving gas like civic's.

Other than the fact that the owners manual recommends 91+ for your car, you should always run higher octane gas in performance engines. It keeps it from knocking and pinging whether you hear it or not. Despite popular belief; there is not hp advantage to it, but you will extend the life of your motor by spending the few extra cents. It's worth the extra $2 + or - ever time you fill up for that. MHO

Name brand gasoline ? Dont make me laugh. I've blended gasoline for over 25 years and it all goes down a pipeline. Gasoline is fungable, meaning that every blender ( refinery ) has to meet certin specifications. All companies buy from each other, they just grab barrels from the pipeline that theve bought. Now octane rating is real. I would not run anything under a 91 rating in a LS1. The only differance in brands is that some brands add a little more detergent to the gasoline than others. All this is fact. This is what I do for a living.

93 everytime, What do you guys thing about the racing fuel 110 octane?

Waste of money unless you're running a race prepped motor. As stated before, octane doesn't give you more hp, it simply curbs your engine's tendancy for detonation and to knock and ping. More HP = more knock and ping. So, all the naturally aspirated LS1s need not apply for race gas. Now, if you have a turbo/blower on a 454 and are above 6 or 700 hp. Then maybe this is the gas for you. Chances are though it's not going to be your daily driver but more like a trailer queen. Basically 91-93 is fine for 95% of LS1 owners. MHO

I must be lucky my ss runs great on 87. I have also used 93 with no difference in performance.Iwill say though at 125mph 87 will ping but what the hell i don't do that speed often enough to worry about. It will probly take a while for the your cars computer to adjust to 87.My manual says you can use 87 but this may hinder some performance.I hav'nt noticed.
