Do you have any kind of aftermarket alarm on the vehicle? My car does what is pictured with the "1/2 turn" that just turns on the amber DRLs and Fogs (if the fog switch is flipped).
With my old alarm, they initially hooked it up so headlights pop up (it was weird), but I had that removed.

parking lights should always be on no matter what.

Yep that's a result of the stripped gear. Once you replace the gear the 1/2 turn (parking lights) and the headlights won't pop up.

Confirmed. Once your stripped gear is replaced, it will work normally. I think these cars are badass coming at you, when you have the "fog" lights on and the amber DRL, with the headlights off. One of the reasons I wanted a Trans Am, not a Camaro.

if you wanted it to work today it's actually quite easy to fix the gear temporarily. Just open the affected side using the manual knob. then remove the black plastic trim around the headlamps. I actually removed the whole headlamp assembly but after doing it i think that this can be done with the headlamps still in the car.

Once you have that black trim off just remove the one nut that holds the headlight arm to the motor. once you remove the arm the headlight will swing free so be sure to prop it up with something. then all you need to do is turn the manual knob until the gear has turned 180 degrees. the rod the arm attaches to is keyed. it is flat on both sides. you just want the other side to face up. then you put the rod back on, replace the nut, replace the plastic trim and manually lower the light.... TADA!!! working lights no more grinding all is well.... for another 5-10 years maybe!

Ya ya agreed, I think these have one of the better looking running/fog light visuals...

And I also back the guys that are saing this is an issue with the busted headlamp motor/gear. I had that issue on a 98 TA as well, when the motor went bad it tried to pop up at the wrong time. Dunno really how a bad motor or gear would make it fire at the wrong setting of the dial, but it does.

both my DRL and my fogs are white, and signals are amber. It was like that when I got 'em. I guess that's abbynormal, I'll have to post a pic here to prove it while we wait for the OP's update.

someone put clear bulbs in them instead of amber ones, it's not uncommon to see idoits driving around with one clear and one amber drl.

p.s. it is technically illegal to have white turn signals just so you know, and because the drls act as turn signal for the front you are breaking the law technically.

    X100!!

i LOVE the look of my Formula with the DRL's/Fogs on. I actually think it looks better than the T/A, even though the TA's have huge fogs. I just like how the fogs on the Formula are pushed way out to the edge of the bumper. Makes the car look wider or something.

As soon as it starts to hit dusk I turn my Fogs on, and I wait till the last possible minute before turning the headlights on. I think these cars look goofy as hell with the headlights up, lol.

They're also much more functional on the Formula since the real point of fog lamps is to provide extra illumination down on the road edge and centerlines in the fog. The TA center placement looks cool but doesn't put as much light on the edges...

Are they? I thought they were different as well. Maybe it's the location next to the DRL/blinkers or that they are not inset as deeply on the Formy that makes em look smaller?

they are the same part/assembly and are interchangable IIRC
