difference between the lt1 and the ls1

im interested in pickin up a trans am sometime in the near future. and was looking at the trans ams from like 96-00. and was wondering what are the main differences in the lt1 and the ls1. i would prefer to get a 98 and up to be able to get the ls1, but i think insurance on the older ones are a little cheaper, so not really sure which way to go. any help would be appreciated. thanks

If it were me I would go with the 98 and up ls1. Unless insurance or price is a major issue.

    LS1 is all aluminum
LT1 is all iron, like stated above, theres a huge differnace when it comes to power. Though the LT1 won my respect, and is plenty fast, it can never be compared to the LS1 in terms of power.

i dont know why u would go lt1 at all if u had the chance to go ls1.. not to say anything bad about lt1 but lets be serious.. how much of a difference is the insurance going to be?? a hundred or so at the most for a year? ull be much happier with the ls1.

seeing as everyone likes the ls1 better, what are some of the differences in the ls1 years? i know the 01-02 had the ls6 intake, but other than that are there any major differences in the years, and is there anything to watch for when making the purchase?

01-02's don't have EGR, have better exhaust manifolds, and have better rod bolts for spinning the motor faster (from what I understand). There are more differences, these are just a few.

Insurance is almost identical. I have full coverage on both cars and I pay almost identical premiums.

    00 Z28 sold :-(

The main thing that sold me on the ls1 over a lt1 was the superior igniton system....coil-over IMO is far better then a distributor(especially the opti). But I do like the reverse cooling and iron block among other things on a lt1...

    Lt1 vs Ls1

I had a 1994 lt1 A4 and I just got a 01 T/A M6. And traded the lt1 for the ls1. Dont get me wrong I like the lt1 and they are fast and I did when alot of races in it. But when I raced Ls1s (with people that know how to drive) they always got me by two cars or more. And I dont know about you but when I am racing someone and I can see them right there in front of me and knowing I just need a little more power it pisses me off. But still fun. I would say Ls1 hands down. and to me it draws more attention. And as for insurance there is not much of a diff... So LS1. Might cost more but I think is well worth it.

The Formula/TransAm, Camaro and Corvette LT1's had aluminum heads.

The 1994-1996 Impala SS LT1 had the iron heads.
